2021 Lexus RX Hybrid Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 6.4

The 2021 Lexus RX Hybrid has a rich cabin outfitted with high-quality materials such as soft leather and wood accents. Passenger space in the first and second rows is good, but third-row and cargo room are tight.

  • "An RX interior is one the plushest and most meticulously crafted in its class. From the dash design to the soft leather, the RX looks and feels special." -- Autotrader
  • "Lexus has chosen fine materials for the RX's interior, including soft leather, textured metallic or wood trims, and soft-touch plastics." -- Car and Driver
  • "We expect a lot from a Lexus interior, and the 2018 RX delivers with upscale materials, exacting fit and finish and attractive modern design. The analog clock is an elegant touch." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Cargo

The RX Hybrid has 16 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 32.6 cubic feet behind the front seats. Those are low totals for the class. The RX L Hybrid is a bit better, with 7.5 cubic feet behind the third row, 23 cubic feet behind the second, and up to 58.5 cubic feet behind the first. That’s good among luxury hybrid and electric SUVs but subpar among luxury midsize SUVs. The slanted roofline cuts into the available space, and the rear seats don’t fold completely flat.

  • "Cargo space is unremarkable for the segment, however, due to the RX’s raked roofline. Space behind the raised back seat is a relatively paltry 18.4 cu ft. or 56.3 cu ft. with the seat lowered." -- Autotrader
  • "The Lexus RX 450h is far from what we'd consider utilitarian. Its cargo area's versatility is limited by its slanted roofline, and the center console lacks storage." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "The 2017 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h's power-operated rear hatch can be activated simply by placing one's hand near the Lexus badge. You'll love it for the convenience and your kids will love it when you tell them you're using the Force for good and not evil." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

Seating

The standard RX Hybrid seats five people in two rows, and the long-wheelbase RX 450hL seats up to seven in three rows. Synthetic leather upholstery and 10-way power-adjustable front seats are standard. Upgrades include genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row outboard seats, second-row captain’s chairs, a power-folding third row, and a heated steering wheel.

The two-row RX Hybrid has a good amount of space in both rows. The seats are well-cushioned, and there’s enough head- and legroom for most adults to sit comfortably. The third row in the RX L is easy to access but exceptionally tight. Even kids are likely to feel cramped back there after a while.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the second row and tether anchors for every third-row seat.

  • "In terms of space, the RX’s second row is comfortable, spacious and easily capable of securing a rear-facing child seat with room to spare." -- Autotrader
  • "The bigger three-row RX L continues for 2020 with second-row captain's chairs that ease entry and exit for third-row passengers." -- Motor Trend (2020)
  • "There's more than enough head- and legroom up front, and there's a good amount of elbow room. Lots of rear headroom and elbow room, too, but knee clearance and toe space can be tight if the backseat passenger and the driver are both taller than 6 feet. Some rivals also offer three rows." -- Edmunds (2019)

Interior Features

The base RX Hybrid’s infotainment system receives mixed reviews. The standard 8-inch touch screen is intuitive, with crisp graphics and an organized menu layout. It also includes smartphone connectivity through Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Other features include a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, six USB ports, HD Radio, satellite radio, a nine-speaker stereo, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

A 12.3-inch touch screen is available. However, it doesn’t control every function, meaning you’ll need to rely on the frustrating Remote Touch system's touchpad for some settings. Additionally, some of the buttons may be hard to reach from the driver's seat. Navigation, wireless device charging, a 12-speaker premium stereo, a 15-speaker Mark Levinson stereo, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof are also available.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and the Lexus Safety System+2.0 suite of driver aids. This suite includes forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure warning, lane trace assist, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and road sign recognition. Front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking camera system, reverse automatic emergency braking, and a head-up display are available.

  • "We found that the addition of a touch interface makes the RX's infotainment system much less frustrating to operate, although on the larger screen some of the icons are hard to reach from the driver's seat. And because there is no 'home' button on the screen, you still have to use the maddening touchpad on the center console for some functions. The interface still seems a bit too complicated as a whole, despite the improvements." -- Car and Driver (2020)
  • "Adding the Navigation package and its 12.3-in infotainment screen brings a dash of high-tech cool. Unfortunately, it also adds the Remote Touch controller which is a frequent source of frustration and distraction. Make sure to try it out thoroughly during a test drive." -- Autotrader
  • "My favorite new improvement to the 2020 RX formula is the available 12.3-inch split-screen display on the dashboard. It's now touch sensitive and sits closer to the driver for easier reach. … The larger, closer screen also appears to have a higher resolution and more vibrant colors that pop more clearly in daylight. In addition to touching the screen, drivers can also use the Remote Touch Pad on the center console to control the infotainment system. … The Lexus Enform software and its menu structure have slightly improved." -- CNET (2020)
