2019 Lexus RX Hybrid Interior Review

Interior: 6.0

The 2019 Lexus RX Hybrid uses high-quality materials throughout its stylish cabin, and few rivals can match its upscale feel. It also has comfortable seats and a long list of standard features. However, many midsize competitors have more cargo space, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a more vexing infotainment system.

  • "The Lexus RX 450h's cabin is great to look at and beautifully made. It's a real standout in the segment. However, some controls are difficult to use and the back seat isn't as generous as those of some rivals." -- Edmunds
  • "We expect a lot from a Lexus interior, and the 2018 RX delivers with upscale materials, exacting fit and finish and attractive modern design. The analog clock is an elegant touch." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "The interior has been modernized with a slim horizontal dash, which extends the vehicle's ambition of lithe athleticism into the cabin. Contrast stitching emphasizes the sporty look of this lighter and trimmer bulkhead. The center stack has been toned down, and a satellite- controlled analog clock adds a bit of ornament and refinement in addition to functionality. It's as if the RX spent a week cleansing at a European spa. Overall, this redesign creates a sense of calm and spaciousness." -- Forbes (2016)

The RX Hybrid seats five and comes standard with leatherette upholstery as well as reclining and folding rear seats. Available features include power-folding heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated and ventilated front sport seats with added side bolstering. There's also a long-wheelbase model, the RX 450hL, which seats seven.

Drivers have limited rearward visibility because of the raked roofline, but otherwise, the front seats are great. They're roomy and comfortable, giving you space to relax while cruising. The rear seats have ample head- and legroom for adults as well. However, the third row in 450hL models is pretty cramped, and it might even be too tight for some children.

The RX Hybrid has room for two child seats in the second row. There are two sets of lower anchors in the outer rear seats and three top tether anchors. The outboard seat-belt buckles are on stable bases and easy to connect. The top tether anchors are easy to access and use.

  • "There's more than enough head- and legroom up front, and there's a good amount of elbow room. Lots of rear headroom and elbow room, too, but knee clearance and toe space can be tight if the backseat passenger and the driver are both taller than 6 feet. Some rivals also offer three rows." -- Edmunds
  • "The seats are plush, and there is plenty of head- and legroom in back. Beware of rear blind spots from the narrow roof design." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "It's roomier in back, compared to the typical compact crossover, and generally more spacious feeling than its predecessor." -- Autoweek (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features in the RX Hybrid include dual-zone automatic climate control and an infotainment system with an 8-inch display, a 12-speaker audio system, HD Radio, Bluetooth, two USB ports, Siri Eyes Free, voice recognition, and navigation.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, park assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and lane departure warning. Some of these features are part of the Lexus Safety System+ suite of technology.

Available features include a panoramic moonroof, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic braking, a 360-degree camera, and an upgraded infotainment system with a 12.3-inch display and a 15-speaker audio system. Also available is Lexus Enform Destinations, which offers 24-hour access to a live response center agent to help you locate restaurants, points of interest, and businesses.

The RX Hybrid comes with a lot of standard features, including plenty of active safety technology that's optional in several rivals. The infotainment system's large display screen is easy to see because of the sharp graphics.

However, these positives may not outweigh the ginormous negative that is the Remote Touch Controller – the mouselike device you use to control the infotainment system. It's overly complex and counterintuitive, so it requires plenty of practice before you're proficient. Even once you get used to it, the controller is distracting to use while you're driving. In short, it's inferior to basically every other infotainment control mechanism out there.

  • "The Remote Touch interface – a joystick used to highlight icons on the 8- or 12.3-inch dashtop display – requires too much dexterity and concentration while driving. It's a distraction. We'd prefer almost any other tech interface." -- Edmunds
  • "All models offer a large multimedia screen which is operated by a console-mounted mouse-like controller some may find frustrating to use." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "We also like the RX's new infotainment system, which offers a huge screen that allows for a dual-screen setup. One benefit of the new model is that the system is placed a little higher on the dashboard so you don't have to take your eyes as far off the road in order to read it. But we'll echo virtually everyone else's complaint that the Remote Touch system is hard to use, even after all its refinements and iterations. Simply put, we'd rather have a touchscreen." -- Autotrader (2016)

The RX Hybrid has a decent amount of cargo space for a luxury hybrid SUV, but it's below average compared to other luxury midsize SUVs. The RX Hybrid gives you 18 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and 55.9 cubic feet with them folded down. The versatility of the RX Hybrid's cargo hold is limited by the sloped roofline and the fact that the rear seats don't fold completely flat, giving you an uneven cargo floor. On the bright side, the cargo hold is wide and fairly deep, so loading cargo is relatively easy. A hands-free power liftgate is available.

  • "The Lexus RX 450h is far from what we'd consider utilitarian. Its cargo area's versatility is limited by its slanted roofline, and the center console lacks storage." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2017 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h's power-operated rear hatch can be activated simply by placing one's hand near the Lexus badge. You'll love it for the convenience and your kids will love it when you tell them you're using the Force for good and not evil." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
