2017 Lexus RX Hybrid Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Lexus RX Hybrid was new.

Interior: 7.9

The 2017 Lexus RX Hybrid's interior is luxurious and has a handsome design. It has top-notch materials that combine comfort and style. The cabin is also very quiet, with little outside noise. The seats are spacious and will keep drivers and passengers comfortable either around town or on long trips. However, the upgraded infotainment system can be frustrating to use due to its joystick-operated, mouselike controller, which takes attention off the road. The standard infotainment system’s knob controller is better, but it isn’t the most intuitive. Additionally, the base system’s screen is smaller, and it’s not as clear as the upgraded system.

  • "The 2017 Lexus RX interior boasts its own smooth style. Last year's redesign saw the gear selector moved from the center dash to a spot in the console below. The design opens space in the dash for easy-to-access climate and audio controls." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "It is also exquisitely made, with high-quality materials everywhere you look and touch." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "The interior has been modernized with a slim horizontal dash, which extends the vehicle's ambition of lithe athleticism into the cabin. Contrast stitching emphasizes the sporty look of this lighter and trimmer bulkhead. The center stack has been toned down, and a satellite- controlled analog clock adds a bit of ornament and refinement in addition to functionality. It's as if the RX spent a week cleansing at a European spa. Overall, this redesign creates a sense of calm and spaciousness." -- Forbes (2016)

The RX Hybrid seats five and comes standard with leather upholstery. Also standard is a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and reclining and folding rear seats. Available features include power-folding heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a wood-trimmed or perforated leather-trimmed steering wheel and shifter, and bolstered heated and ventilated front seats.

The RX Hybrid has supportive, comfortable seats with luxurious upholstery. There is plenty of leg- and headroom, and the cabin feels more spacious than previous models. The standard 10-way power-adjustable heated driver's seat with power lumbar support provides the ultimate comfort. The standard reclining (and optionally heated) rear seats keep passengers happy as well.

The RX Hybrid has room for two child seats in the second row. There are two sets of lower anchors in the outer rear seats and three top tether anchors. The outboard seat belt buckles are on stable bases and easy to connect. However, the middle seat's buckle is flimsy, and kids in booster seats may have difficulty buckling themselves in. The top tether anchors are easy to access and use.

  • "The standard 10-way power-adjustable front seats can be upgraded with the optional Luxury Package. With it, they come wrapped in semi-aniline leather and have power lower cushion lengtheners, making these the most comfortable seats in the whole lineup." -- Cars.com (2016)
  • "Although backseat leg- and headroom are similar to the smaller, but surprisingly spacious Lexus NX , the RX's added width makes it feel much bigger. We also appreciated the ample amount of rear-seat recline (especially with optional power adjustment) as well as the larger, optional rear entertainment screens that tilt to assure a perfect viewing angle." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "It's roomier in back, compared to the typical compact crossover, and generally more spacious feeling than its predecessor." -- Autoweek (2016)

Interior Features

The 2017 Lexus RX Hybrid comes standard with HD Radio, two USB ports, Siri Eyes Free, an 8-inch display, smartphone integration, a rearview camera, satellite radio, a DVD entertainment system, voice recognition, park assist, Bluetooth, a 12-speaker sound system, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic braking, a sunroof, and navigation. The Lexus Safety System+ is also standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and lane departure warning. Lexus Enform Destinations, which offers 24-hour access to a live response center agent to help you locate restaurants, points of interest, and businesses, is also standard.

Available features include a 12.3-inch display, a panoramic moonroof, a 15-speaker sound system, a 360-degree camera, and a rear-seat entertainment system with dual 11.6-inch screens.

The RX Hybrid’s base infotainment system is controlled by a simple knob with three buttons above it. It is much easier to use than the upgraded Remote Touch system. The upgraded system is controlled by a joystick on the center console. It uses a mouselike controller to operate the infotainment system. Trying to navigate the system with the joystick is difficult, especially when trying to concentrate on driving. Fortunately, the screen is placed high on the dashboard, making it easy to see. The upgraded 12.3-inch screen has a crisp display and shows features, such as navigation, better than the standard 8-inch screen.

  • "We also like the RX's new infotainment system, which offers a huge screen that allows for a dual-screen setup. One benefit of the new model is that the system is placed a little higher on the dashboard so you don't have to take your eyes as far off the road in order to read it. But we'll echo virtually everyone else's complaint that the Remote Touch system is hard to use, even after all its refinements and iterations. Simply put, we'd rather have a touchscreen." -- Autotrader (2016)
  • "The new RX makes a nice place to hang out with family or a couple of friends. The dashboard seems a hint busy at first blush, but that might be the price of lots of hard switches that work directly on the things you want to adjust, no menus required. We'll take the switches. Beyond that, it's mostly serene. The layout is effective and the graphics are crisp and legible throughout. The finish is first rate and the seats are firmly comfortable." -- Autoweek (2016)
  • "Lower-end RX models get a smaller, eight-inch screen with way too much surrounding black plastic. If you can afford it, go for the larger display." -- Autoblog (2016)

The 2017 RX Hybrid's cargo space is small for its class. It has 18 cubic feet of space with the rear seats in use and 55.9 cubic feet with the seats folded. Space is further limited by the steep slope of the rear liftgate, and the rear seats don't fold completely flat. However, the RX Hybrid is easy to load because the cargo space is wide and deep. It comes standard with 40/20/40 split folding rear seats, and a hands-free power liftgate is available.

  • "The 2017 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h's power-operated rear hatch can be activated simply by placing one's hand near the Lexus badge. You'll love it for the convenience and your kids will love it when you tell them you're using the Force for good and not evil." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "In terms of cargo space, the steeply raked liftgate has reduced versatility. There really isn't much space above the cargo cover line, meaning that taller items either won't fit or will have to be placed atop the 40/20/40-split rear seat that doesn't quite fold flat. Therefore, the cargo area is far more trunklike than those of its competitors, but it is very deep and wide, which makes it easy to load cargo. Accessing it is also enhanced for 2016 with an available touch-free opening mechanism activated by holding one's hand (or elbow, forehead, whatever) over the Lexus emblem." -- Edmunds (2016)
