How Much Does the 2017 Lexus RX 450h Cost to Own?

Five-year costs for gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs for the 2017 Lexus RX 450h are estimated to be about $28,800. That’s well below average for a luxury midsize SUV.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New RX 450h?

The 2018 Lexus RX 450h’s starting price of $45,895 is about $7,000 lower than the average price of a used 2017 model. However, Lexus took away some of the RX Hybrid’s standard features for 2018. A moonroof, navigation system, leather seating, heated and cooled front seats, and active suspension came standard in the 2017 model, but not in the 2018. Still, the 2018 RX 450h is well equipped, especially considering its lower price. Also, the 2018 model’s standard infotainment system is better than the clunky system found in better-equipped 2017 models.

The 2017 RX 450h has an average used price of $52,895. There are several new luxury midsize SUVs worth considering that cost the same or less, including the 2018 Acura MDX. We named the MDX our 2018 Best Luxury 3-Row SUV for the Money because of its excellent combination of quality and value. It starts at $44,200, and though it doesn't have the fuel economy of the Lexus hybrid, this Acura comes with a better infotainment system, three rows of seats, and much more cargo space.

Which Model Year of the Lexus RX 450h Is Best?

The Lexus 450h was completely redesigned for the 2016 model year. Pre-2016 models cost less but fall short of the interior refinement found in the current generation. The 2016 RX 450h lacks the available all-wheel-drive system added for 2017. Unless that is a must-have, a 2016 model is the best choice for most buyers.

2017 Lexus RX 450h Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2017 Lexus RX 450h or 2017 BMW X5?

The 2017 BMW X5 is another great luxury midsize SUV. The X5 has a better range of powerful engines, sharper handling, and substantially more cargo space than the Lexus. Your choice between the two comes down to the BMW’s performance and cargo space versus the RX Hybrid’s comfort, higher predicted reliability rating, and excellent fuel economy.

The 2017 Audi Q7 has agile handling and good maneuverability, along with a perfect safety rating. Both SUVs come with similar features, but the Q7’s interior is more luxurious than the RX Hybrid's. Still, the RX 450h is a better choice because of its superior fuel economy, lower operating costs, and almost perfect predicted reliability rating (compared to the Audi’s below-average score).
