2013 Lexus RX Hybrid Overview

Is the 2013 Lexus RX Hybrid a Good Used SUV?

A used 2013 Lexus RX Hybrid is an excellent choice if you’re shopping for a luxury midsize SUV. This five-seat crossover – also referred to as the RX 450h – impresses with its smooth ride, roomy cabin, sterling reliability, and many advanced safety features. It also offers the best fuel economy of any 2013 midsize SUV, including non-luxury models. There are some drawbacks, like a clumsy infotainment system. When it was new, we named the RX Hybrid the 2013 Best Hybrid SUV for the Money.

Used 2013 Lexus RX Hybrid Performance and Interior

The Lexus RX 450h has a V6 engine with two electric motors for front-wheel drive models, three for all-wheel drive models. Both setups yield a combined 295 horsepower. A continuously variable automatic transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD) are standard; all-wheel drive (AWD) is available. The hybrid setup zips the SUV up to speed briskly, and the transitions between electric and gasoline power are smooth. Fuel economy is excellent, at 31 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive. Expect 29/27 mpg city/highway with all-wheel drive. However, throttle response can be slow, which limits passing power.

The RX’s suspension softens bumps and dips in the road nicely, yielding a smooth ride. The SUV feels stable around corners as well. Its steering is responsive, and the brakes provide confident stopping power. The Lexus stops short of feeling sporty, though. When properly equipped with all-wheel drive, the RX 450h has a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.

The Lexus RX 450h is a 2-row SUV with seating for five. Its front seats are plush and provide good long-distance comfort. A wide range of seat and steering-wheel adjustments ensure drivers of all sizes can find a comfy position. The rear seats are similarly cozy and offer generous head- and legroom. There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for securing child car seats in the rear outboard positions. A single tether anchor is available in the middle seat. The Lexus RX has 40 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to a roomy 80.3 cubic feet with its rear seats folded flat.

The RX’s cabin is hushed at higher speeds, and its interior materials feel high in quality. Many frequently touched areas are softly padded, as well. However, the overall dashboard design isn’t as fresh as some competitors, giving the RX 450h’s cabin a somewhat stodgy appearance. The standard infotainment system works acceptably well and operates by turning a dial on the center console. Models with navigation have the Remote Touch system instead, which features a mouselike controller. It’s not very user-friendly, and it can be quite distracting to use while driving.

Is the 2013 RX Hybrid the Best Model Year to Buy?

The 2013 model year is a great place to start if you’re shopping for a used RX Hybrid. Lexus updated the exterior styling of the RX for 2013 and added blind spot monitoring as an option, which wasn’t available in 2011 or 2012. That said, you may want to consider the 2014 RX Hybrid model as well, which offers a more advanced collision warning system that can automatically apply the brakes.

2013 Lexus RX Hybrid and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2013 Lexus RX 450h or 2013 Audi Q5 Hybrid?

The Audi Q5 Hybrid and RX 450h are both great hybrid SUVs, but each has it perks. Go with the Lexus if practicality is your main concern. It’s more fuel efficient, offers far more cargo space, and rates higher than the Audi for reliability. Go with the Audi if refinement is what you’re after. The Q5 has a more upscale interior with higher-quality materials, an easier-to-use infotainment system, sportier handling, and zippier acceleration.

Which Is Better: 2013 Lexus RX 450h or 2013 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?

The 2013 Toyota Highlander Hybrid shares its gasoline-electric powertrain with the RX 450h, and as a result, it gets similar fuel economy. The Toyota also seats up to seven and features a simpler infotainment system. Also, used Highlander models are typically much more affordable than RX Hybrids. All in all, both are great SUV options, though the Lexus offers more safety features and a higher reliability rating.

Which Is Better: 2013 Lexus RX 450h or 2013 Lexus RX 350?

The non-hybrid Lexus RX 350 shares many of the RX 450h’s best qualities. Both models impress with roomy seating and cargo space, pleasant handling, great reliability, and the same list of safety features. The trade-off comes at the gas pump. While used RX 350 models are typically much less expensive to buy, these SUVs earn much lower fuel economy estimates (18/26 mpg).
