2011 Lexus RX Hybrid Review

The 2011 Lexus RX Hybrid blends a luxurious interior and a refined powertrain with excellent fuel economy. Reviewers said it’s an excellent hybrid SUV.

Pros & Cons

  • Great fuel economy
  • Comfortable ride
  • Attractive, well-made interior
  • Not much fun to drive
  • Doesn’t offer a third row of seats
  • Low safety ratings for the class

2011 Lexus RX Hybrid Overview

The Lexus RX 450h is like that old Reese’s commercial. With the RX hybrid, Lexus got a hybrid in their luxury and luxury in their hybrid. The result, reviewers said, is a combination that’s like chocolate and peanut butter: very satisfying. Go for the RX Hybrid and you’ll get a high-end and high-tech interior, smooth performance and the satisfaction of saving some gas. Standard features are typical for the class, including a nine-speaker stereo system and walnut trim, while the extensive list of options when it was new includes features like a premium audio system, rear-seat entertainment system, navigation, LED or HID headlights and heated and ventilated front seats. One downside of the RX Hybrid is that its safety scores are lower than most rivals’.

Test drivers had only minor quibbles with the Lexus RX Hybrid. Shoppers who want an SUV with three rows of seats will have to look elsewhere, as will those who want an SUV with sporty performance. Additionally, the gas-only Lexus RX gets good fuel economy for an SUV, without the price premium that the RX 450h’s hybrid powertrain is likely to command. However, test drivers agreed that anyone looking for a luxury crossover for five with a comfortable ride, an impeccable interior and fantastic fuel economy should look no further than the 2011 Lexus RX Hybrid.

Other Cars to Consider

If you like most aspects of the Lexus RX Hybrid but want something that’s likely to be less expensive, consider its gas-only sibling, the 2011 Lexus RX 350. The RX 350 shares almost all of the Lexus RX 450h’s high points, including a beautiful cabin and a smooth ride. It also has higher safety ratings than its hybrid counterpart.

If you need three rows of seats instead of two, consider the 2011 Lincoln MKT. Its fuel economy isn’t spectacular, but it comes with more standard features. Test drivers said it’s a great performer, and appreciated its roomy third row. The MKT's safety ratings are also better.
