2020 Lexus RX 350 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.0

The 2020 Lexus RX 350 has a high-end cabin that's full of premium materials and soft-touch surfaces. There's plenty of room for passengers, and the updated infotainment system is more intuitive than before. However, cargo space is unimpressive.

  • "It retains its high level of quality upholstery, cabin accents and seat comfort." -- Edmunds
  • "Inside, the RX is very quiet and well-finished." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "Inside, you'll find a fairly minimalistic cabin, at least compared to previous iterations of the RX. Lexus used to be all about the overtly lavish 'Dynasty'-style interior, with glossy burled woods and ruched leather. Now, the RX has lost some of its grandeur. Don't get me wrong, everything is still top-notch. … But it doesn't have the old-school sparkle anymore.” -- New York Daily News (2018)

Seating

The base RX 350 seats up to five people on standard synthetic leather upholstery. Opting for the RX L raises the seating capacity to seven. Leather upholstery is available, as are ventilated and heated front seats, second-row captain’s chairs, second-row power-folding and reclining seats, heated second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Space is generous in the RX, and taller passengers can stretch out in the front or back. The second-row seats in RX L models can be had as captain’s chairs, which make it easier to access the third row.

For securing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the RX’s rear outboard seats, as well as a tether-only connection for the rear middle seat. The middle seat has the ability to borrow a lower anchor from adjacent seats. RX L models get another tether anchor for the third row.

  • "The RX remains as practical as ever. This roomy SUV seats five passengers in luxurious comfort." -- Edmunds
  • "Despite the busy design, the RX's interior is a nice place to sit. The seats are comfortable, and materials feel soft everywhere you touch. The commanding driver's seat position provides good visibility. The bigger three-row RX L continues for 2020 with second-row captain's chairs that ease entry and exit for third-row passengers." -- Motor Trend
  • "Rear passengers get lots of leg and knee room." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Interior Features

The standard infotainment system in the RX has an 8-inch touch screen, six USB ports, Bluetooth, HD Radio, satellite radio, a nine-speaker stereo, and smartphone integration via Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa. Also standard in the base RX are proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Standard driver assistance features include lane keep assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, a pre-collision warning and braking system with pedestrian detection, and a rearview camera.

Convenience upgrades include a 12.3-inch dual-screen display, the Remote Touch interface, navigation, the Enform App suite with connectivity to services such as Slacker and iHeart Radio), a 12-speaker stereo, a 15-speaker Mark Levinson sound system, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof.

This SUV offers more driver assistance features too, such as a head-up display, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and a 360-degree parking camera system.

Critics praise the 2020 RX’s addition of a touch screen to supplement the Remote Touch interface. Using the touch screen makes it easier to control some infotainment functions, though it is in an awkward position for some drivers.

  • "The arrival of a touchscreen infotainment display is an important update. You're no longer confined to Lexus' awkward trackpad (what it calls Remote Touch Interface) to find your songs, work the navigation or place a call. The display is available in 8- and 12-inch versions, and it's moved more than 5 inches closer to front passengers for an easier reach." -- Edmunds
  • "We are pleased … that the 2020 RX now offers – brace yourselves, here it comes – a touchscreen. Yes, that’s right – the 2020 Lexus RX has returned to the technology that it debuted nearly two decades ago, when Lexus first introduced navigation in the 2001 RX300. This is a Big Deal, because it’s essentially a tacit admission that the Remote Touch mouse- and touchpad-style interfaces, about which we have been complaining ceaselessly since they were first introduced on the 2010 RX, aren’t working." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Buyers can choose between the standard 8.0-inch or the available 12.3-inch touchscreen; the latter can be had as a split screen and has a higher resolution than the smaller screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Alexa are compatible with the updated RX, and we found it very easy to use CarPlay through the touchpad. Although the touch functionality is new, the screen is a bit hard to reach for the driver given its location on top of the dash; it's pretty easy to control from the front passenger's seat, though." -- Motor Trend

Cargo

The 2020 RX 350 has 18.4 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and a total of 56.3 cubic feet with them folded down. That's small for a luxury two-row SUV, and the three-row RX 350L isn’t much bigger. It has 7.5 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 23 cubic feet behind the second, and up to 58.5 with all seats folded. Most luxury three-row SUVs have more space than that.

A hands-free liftgate is available. A power liftgate comes standard in the RX L.

  • "Cargo space remains smaller than some rivals, though. If you routinely need to carry large loads, some of the RX's competitors might be a better fit." -- Edmunds
  • "This is one of the least generous midsize crossovers in terms of available space aft of the back seat. … However, we picked this test vehicle up at the airport following an extended family vacation, and it had no trouble accommodating all of our belongings." -- New York Daily News (2018)
  • "Cargo space is impressive, with over 18 cubic feet behind the rear seats. That number expands to over 56 cubic feet with rear seats folded." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
