2019 Lexus RX 350 Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2019 Lexus RX 350 was new.

Performance: 7.8

The 2019 Lexus RX 350 has a strong V6 engine that makes it feel right at home zooming along the highways or climbing uphill. It doesn’t have the off-road capabilities of its GX sibling, but its on-road ride quality is serene. Though, some rivals have livelier handling and are more engaging to drive.

  • "The 3.5-liter V6 and eight-speed automatic make a great team." -- Edmunds
  • "This SUV is quiet, quick, refined, isolated, and perfectly at home on city streets, suburban boulevards, and fast-flowing freeways. And the F Sport costume makes it look better, if not drive that way." -- New York Daily News (2018)
  • "Lexus recently overhauled the entire RX line giving it a more aggressive exterior and a more fluid interior design. Changes were made to the suspension and drivetrain as well, but the … Lexus RX 350 remains a luxury SUV that places an emphasis on comfort and confidence over blistering performance." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

Acceleration and Power

The 2019 Lexus RX 350 has one powertrain, a 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 295 horsepower. It's paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration is swift, and the automatic transmission makes timely shifts.

This SUV gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, or 19/26 mpg city/highway with the three-row RX L. Those are decent figures for the class.

  • "The eight-speed transmission delivers smooth and predictable shifts, yet it readily downshifts as needed in response to throttle inputs. That's an increasingly rare trait in a world concerned with fuel economy." -- Edmunds
  • "This Lexus feels quick. The transmission steps down swiftly when asked, sending a surge of power accompanied by a naughty growl. It was a pleasure to squirt through traffic and climb up grades, especially when switched into the Sport + driving mode." -- New York Daily News (2018)
  • "The RX's V6 is both powerful and impressively smooth, matched to an 8-speed automatic that should be the standard by which all automatics are judged." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

Ride and Handling

The 2019 RX 350 aims to deliver a comfortable ride, and it succeeds. You’ll barely notice road blemishes, as this SUV glides right over them. It’s not as sporty as rivals, however, even in the F-Sport trim. The brakes are firm, but this SUV has body lean around turns and minimal steering feedback. Front-wheel drive comes standard, but you can opt for all-wheel drive.

  • "You'll feel stable and secure in the RX 350, even when hustled on mountain roads. Body roll is gradual and smooth, and there isn't that much of it until you push it hard. It's not a sports car, but it's certainly no marshmallow either." -- Edmunds
  • "Superlatives such as silky and supple are appropriate when discussing the ride quality around town. … Ask it to show off its moves on a canyon road, however, and the RX, despite its F Sport finery, balks. Its suspension allows the crossover to roll and wallow, while the tires protest their load with every turn. The steering is indeed well weighted, but lacks accuracy. I had no issues with the brakes, but overall, this isn't a vehicle I'd want as a companion to enjoy a long, scenic drive." -- New York Daily News (2018)
  • "Ride comfort is plush... Handling, however, is ponderous and devoid of any sporty feel but ultimately secure." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
