2015 Lexus NX Hybrid Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2015 Lexus NX Hybrid was new.

Interior: 8.2

The 2015 Lexus NX Hybrid's cabin is built with soft-touch materials and has an attractive design. Still, a few critics think that some panel stitching and fake metal trim look a bit tacky. The NX 300h is praised for its supportive front seats and spacious rear seats, although the NX Hybrid offers less cargo space than a number of rivals. Some reviewers say the optional Remote Touch infotainment system controller is easy to use, but others think it is distracting and takes a while to learn.

  • "The NX's cabin isn't quite as radical as the exterior is, but it nevertheless exudes a cool, modern vibe that won't be mistaken for anything else in the segment. Construction is absolutely top-notch, with materials that look and feel rich -- especially in the available two-tone color schemes." -- Edmunds
  • "Overall, the interior design seems interesting and fresh, though we wish Lexus would upgrade its cheap, metallic patina-colored plastic trim on the doors, dash, and even the 'L' on the steering wheel to something more, well, metal." -- Car and Driver
  • "For all of the 2015 Lexus NX 300h's heavily wrought lines, gaping grille, and sharp roofline, the interior is traditional Lexus. Perfectly padded leather seating surfaces, handsome stitching, and an attractive instrument design are sure to keep customers happy." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "The NX's interior packs a lot of eye candy, mostly thanks to stitched, leatherlike synthetic materials that cover portions of the dashboard, center console and doors. Less convincing is the molded stitching that adorns upper sections - similar to the dash materials in the Camry and ES - as well as the big chunks of faux-metal plastic trim that flank the center controls." -- Cars.com

The 2015 Lexus NX Hybrid seats five and comes standard with a power-adjustable driver's seat and leatherette upholstery. Leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel are optional. Test drivers say the front seats are spacious and supportive, though a few critics mention that the large rear headrests compromise rearward visibility. The rear seats have adequate head- and legroom, reviewers add. Even though the NX Hybrid doesn't come standard with leather upholstery, auto journalists think that the standard leatherette has a pleasing look and feel.

  • "The front seats are excellent, the rears just shy of great. The high beltline and small windows give a bit of BMW X4-like intimacy back there." -- Car and Driver
  • "Lexus' standard NuLuxe upholstery helps, too. It's fake leather, but it's damn convincing. Real cowhide is optional, but you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference." -- Cars.com
  • "Front head and leg room are very good, and seats are supportive. … Rear seats are positioned a little higher than the front seats. Head room is acceptable for 2 adults. Three children will fit across the rear seat. Triangular rear-quarter windows let in some light, but the sloping roof pillars are still thick, impeding over-the-shoulder visibility. The view directly to the rear is hemmed in by rear head rests." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Rear passengers in the NX should find a generous amount of space, at least compared with most other compact luxury crossovers." -- Edmunds

Interior Features

The 2015 Lexus NX 300h comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity key, Siri Eyes Free Mode iPhone integration, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a USB port and an eight-speaker Display Audio system with a 7-inch display screen. Options include adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, a power moonroof, a 10-speaker audio system, the Enform App Suite and navigation with Lexus' Remote Touch controller.

Most auto journalists think that the available Remote Touch controller is straightforward once you learn how to use it. A few critics find it to be a bit distracting to use while driving, but others like it better than the joystick controller that comes on models that don't have navigation. Reviewers also say that the climate controls are easy to operate.

  • "The new Remote Touch Interface touchpad-style controller with haptic feedback handled secondary controls in our test vehicle; it takes some getting used to but works better than the old Lexus toggle-mouse thing." -- Car and Driver
  • "The new RTI central controller included with the navigation option package offers more-intuitive touchpad operation on the center console. … The touchpad is a little easier to use than Lexus' usual 'joystick' system (which is still used in NXs without navigation), and sensitivity is adjustable, but it still demands some attention from the driver." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The high-mounted climate controls are easy to reach and see, while other secondary controls are intuitive." -- Edmunds
  • "The new touch-pad interface for the Remote Touch works well, and retains the haptic 'thump' you get when putting the cursor over one of the on-screen buttons." -- Kelley Blue Book

The 2015 NX Hybrid has 16.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 53.7 with the rear seats folded, which is on the low end of the class. Test drivers say that the NX 300h's meager cargo space and sloping back window limit its usefulness as a cargo-carrying vehicle.

  • "Unfortunately, the NX 300h's cargo area is significantly lacking. Maximum cargo capacity is among the lowest in the segment, but its dramatically raked liftgate makes it even less versatile than its measurements would suggest. Its capacity with the rear seats in place is the worst in the segment, so if you have a family or need more versatility than what is essentially offered by most wagons, the NX is probably not for you." -- Edmunds
  • "Also like the X4, the sloping roofline restricts the usable cargo space." -- Car and Driver
