2015 Lexus NX Hybrid Review

The 2015 Lexus NX Hybrid combines good safety scores and perfect predicted reliability. Despite its somewhat lackluster gas/electric hybrid powertrain and small cargo capacity for the class, the NX Hybrid is one of the highest-ranking luxury compact SUVs.

Pros & Cons

  • Excellent fuel economy for the class
  • Slow acceleration
  • Limited cargo space
  • Choppy regenerative brakes

2015 Lexus NX Hybrid Overview

Is the 2015 Lexus NX Hybrid a Good Used SUV?

By most measures, the 2015 Lexus NX Hybrid, also known as the NX 300h, is a good used SUV. (The nonhybrid, turbocharged 2015 Lexus NX 200t is reviewed separately.) The NX 300h has strong fuel economy estimates thanks to its combined gas/electric powertrain. It could use more zip when you hit the accelerator, but it handles well. This luxury compact SUV is a good choice for buyers who spend a lot of time driving on local roads.

Used 2015 Lexus NX Hybrid Performance and Interior

The 2015 Lexus NX Hybrid has a four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that produce 194 horsepower. A continuously variable automatic transmission is standard. The NX Hybrid’s engine can be noisy under hard acceleration, and the regenerative brakes – designed to capture energy – don’t always operate smoothly. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available. With its focus on fuel economy, the NX Hybrid’s handling is tuned more for efficiency than sportiness. The front-wheel-drive NX Hybrid gets an EPA rating of 34 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel-drive model has the same highway estimate, but its city rating drops to 33 mpg.

The 2015 Lexus NX Hybrid's cabin is attractively designed and built with soft-touch materials. It seats five and has spacious, supportive front seats. The rear seats have adequate head- and legroom, but the large rear headrests compromise rearward visibility. The NX Hybrid includes a power-adjustable driver's seat and leatherette upholstery. Leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are available. The NX Hybrid has complete sets of LATCH child-seat connectors on the rear outboard seats and a middle-seat tether anchor.

The 2015 Lexus NX Hybrid includes dual-zone automatic climate control, a proximity key, Siri Eyes Free Mode iPhone integration, Bluetooth, and an eight-speaker Display Audio system with a 7-inch display screen. Available features include navigation with Lexus' Remote Touch controller. The controller is straightforward once you learn how to use it, but it can be a bit distracting to use while driving.

The 2015 NX Hybrid has 16.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 53.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, which is on the low end of the class. The space is further compromised by a sloping back window. Competitors like the 2015 Acura RDX and the 2015 BMW X3 have much more cargo volume behind the second row and overall.

2015 Lexus NX Hybrid and Other SUVs to Consider

The 2015 Lexus NX 300h is the sole hybrid in the luxury compact SUV class. While the NX Hybrid’s around-town fuel economy numbers are hard to beat, some nonhybrid rivals top its highway estimates.

Which Is Better: 2015 Lexus NX Hybrid or 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class?

Both of these SUVs are worth a look. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class isn't a hybrid, but it gets better highway fuel economy than the NX Hybrid (32 mpg versus 30 mpg). It also scores a perfect safety ranking and gets higher performance marks thanks to its quick acceleration and sharp, carlike handling. In contrast, the NX Hybrid earns slightly better interior scores because it has more rear-seat legroom.

Which Is Better: 2015 Lexus NX Hybrid or 2015 Acura RDX?

The 2015 Acura RDX trails the NX Hybrid when it comes to around-town fuel economy, but it’s the better option in most other aspects. The RDX’s base V6 produces a more powerful 273 horsepower, while yielding just 2 mpg less on the highway than the NX Hybrid. Like the Lexus, the Acura has a quiet interior. The RDX has above-average predicted reliability, though it still can’t match the NX Hybrid’s perfect score.
