2017 Lexus LX Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2017 Lexus LX was new.

Performance: 7.0

The 2017 Lexus LX 570's V8 engine delivers brisk acceleration, though some competitors are quicker. The LX gets poor fuel economy estimates for a large luxury SUV, but it's one of the most capable options for off-roading. The LX feels relatively composed and comfortable, but expect some body roll through quicker turns.

  • "Around town, the 2017 Lexus LX 570 is divine. It shrugs off potholes and bumpy roads with ease. It's like a luxury cruise ship riding over choppy waters without the slightest hint of a disturbance." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2014 Lexus LX 570 is big in every way. Weighing more than a Cadillac Escalade, the LX nevertheless manages its weight with ease, remaining firmly planted when moving at high speeds and demonstrating surprising agility in the turns." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)
  • "Unlike many luxury crossovers with carlike unibody construction, the LX 570 utilizes traditional body-on-frame construction that's built for serious off-road use. The problem is, most SUVs these days never get more serious than a gravel driveway, so the hardcore hardware is overkill for the typical shopper." -- Autotrader (2014)

Acceleration and Power

The 2017 LX 570 comes with a 5.7-liter V8 engine that generates 383 horsepower and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The EPA estimates that the LX will get up to 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway, which are some of the lowest numbers in the class.

The Lexus LX's V8 is powerful and delivers brisk acceleration. However, some rivals offer more-powerful and fuel-efficient engines.

  • "The LX isn't as fast as most of its rivals." -- Edmunds
  • "As for power, the LX used to be a star with its beastly 5.7-liter V8, but now that the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, for example, offers quicker twin-turbo V8s that also get better fuel economy, the Lexus V8's luster has diminished. Nonetheless, this remains a strong and smooth engine that'll likely satisfy if you don't mind quenching its prodigious thirst." -- Autotrader (2015)
  • "The LX 570 boasts a 5.7-liter V8 that … produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. That's enough output to muscle the big SUV over precipitous hills or tow up to 7,000 lbs." -- Left Lane News (2015)

Handling and Braking

The 2017 Lexus LX is comfortable over rugged roads, and it makes its way through turns with decent composure for its size. Still, like most large SUVs, you are likely to notice numb steering and body roll through faster corners. The LX comes with a Drive Mode Select system that lets drivers choose between three different suspension settings: Comfort, Sport S, and Sport S+.

  • "Around turns, the LX is a bit ponderous, though the same can be said for most vehicles in this class." -- Edmunds
  • "Despite its size, it's practically graceful in corners; not sporty, but confident and comfortable. True, there's a bit more rumble in the ride than you might expect in a Lexus, but there's a reason: This is a real SUV." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The handling is average at best, with lots of lean and body roll in the curves. The steering is light to the point of numbness, and the turning circle is epically wide." -- Autotrader (2015)

The 2017 LX comes equipped with Crawl Control, an adjustable suspension, a locking center differential, a two-speed transfer case, and full-time four-wheel drive. It also comes with a terrain selection system, which allows you to adjust the SUV's performance dynamics by choosing from five different terrain types: Rock, Rock and Dirt, Loose Rock, Mogul, and Mud and Sand. The LX is one of the most capable off-road SUVs in the class.

  • "Going off-road is where the LX 570 shines brightest. Forget dirt roads and all-weather conditions – this thing can plow over obstacles and through murky depths you wouldn't consider passable in most other vehicles. With its sophisticated suspension, cleverly engineered crawl-control system and rugged construction, this deluxe SUV has the capability to take you almost anywhere you might ever want to go. Though owning and driving an LX 570 on a daily basis might have some drawbacks, off-roading is its most redeeming quality." -- Edmunds
  • "Forget the leather and wood trim: The 2017 LX 570 is a real off-road-ready rig, and if you take it to such territory, you'll appreciate its Crawl Control mode. It controls the brake and throttle inputs slowing the LX on steep grades, letting you focus on avoiding obstacles." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Lexus LX 570 is essentially a mildly restyled version of the Toyota Land Cruiser. That mean's (sic) it's an old-school, full-size SUV that can tow like a pickup and venture off the pavement to remote places where few other vehicles dare tread." -- Left Lane News (2015)
