2015 Lexus LX Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2015 Lexus LX was new.

Performance: 7.6

Most test drivers are pleased with the 2015 Lexus LX's quick acceleration. However, some critics note that rivals offer more powerful engines, and the LX gets poor fuel economy for the class. A few automotive writers say the 2015 LX 570 has ponderous handling and lacks composure around corners. However, others report that it feels secure through turns and its light steering makes it fairly easy to maneuver. With standard full-time four-wheel drive and features to maximize off-road capability, reviewers agree that the LX 570 can easily tackle rough terrain.

  • Though it can't match the space or handling refinement of some competitors, it's nevertheless plenty civilized in most driving situations while offering an even more coddling interior than the already opulent Land Cruiser." -- Left Lane News
  • "The 2015 Lexus LX 570 rides regally on all roads, shrugging off impacts like the softly sprung luxury liner it is." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2014 Lexus LX 570 is big in every way. Weighing more than a Cadillac Escalade, the LX nevertheless manages its weight with ease, remaining firmly planted when moving at high speeds and demonstrating surprising agility in the turns." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)
  • "Unlike many luxury crossovers with carlike unibody construction, the LX 570 utilizes traditional body-on-frame construction that's built for serious off-road use. The problem is, most SUVs these days never get more serious than a gravel driveway, so the hardcore hardware is overkill for the typical shopper." -- AutoTrader (2014)

Acceleration and Power

The Lexus LX 570 is powered by a 5.7-liter V8 that produces 383 horsepower. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 12/17 mpg city/highway, which is poor for the class.

Most automotive journalists agree that the 2015 Lexus LX 570 has plenty of power and quick acceleration. Still, critics point out that a number of rivals are faster.

  • Wind and road noise are kept in check, and although the V8 becomes audible during acceleration, it's an eminently pleasant rumble. Unfortunately, the acceleration itself is underwhelming if you're familiar with competing models." -- Edmunds
  • "The LX 570 boasts a 5.7-liter V8 that pairs with a six-speed automatic and produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. That's enough output to muscle the big SUV over precipitous hills or tow up to 7,000 lbs." -- Left Lane News
  • "The LX's 5.7-liter V8 can propel it to 60 mph in just 7.5 seconds, which is an impressive feat in itself." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)
  • As for power, the LX used to be a star with its beastly 5.7-liter V8. But now that the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, for example, offers quicker twin-turbo V8s that also get better fuel economy, the Lexus V8's luster has diminished. Nonetheless, this remains a strong and smooth engine that will likely satisfy if you don't mind quenching its prodigious thirst." -- AutoTrader (2014)

Handling and Braking

While some reviewers say the LX 570 has composed handling, others report that there's lots of body lean around corners. A few test drivers say the LX 570's light steering makes it more maneuverable, but others report that this makes for less precise handling. The 2015 LX 570 has an adjustable suspension with which the driver can dial in suspension firmness with normal, comfort and sport drive modes. A few reviewers say that although the system aids in ride comfort, it compromises handling, especially in normal and comfort modes.

  • "Tipping the scales at 6,000 pounds, the LX is heavier than the Infiniti QX80 and even the Cadillac Escalade. However, thanks to a sophisticated 3-mode suspension setup, the LX 570 manages its weight with the grace of an athletic linebacker, remaining firmly planted at highway speeds and proving surprisingly agile in the turns." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "We're also not enthused about the LX's ponderous handling relative to nimbler European rivals." -- Edmunds
  • "The handling is average at best, with lots of lean and body roll in the curves. The steering is light to the point of numbness, and the turning circle is epically wide." -- AutoTrader (2014)
  • Steering is lightly weighted to make it easy to maneuver around parking lots, and the adaptive variable suspension was nice to have. You can soften it for a comfortable ride, but it will mean a lot of lean around bends and turns, but you can stiffen it to make it a slightly tighter handler. Comfort and normal modes were both too soft for my tastes, which had me in sport for most of my time with the big ute. Even in sport mode, the ride was nowhere near firm." -- AutoWeek (2013)

The 2015 Lexus LX 570 comes standard with full-time four-wheel drive and crawl control, a system that manages throttle and brakes automatically so the driver can focus on steering through tough terrain. The standard multi-terrain select system allows the driver to choose between five modes for different types of terrain: rock, rock and dirt, mud and sand, mogul and loose rock. Automotive journalists say tackling tough trails and obstacles is easy with the LX 570.

  • "If you also intend to venture off-road, the LX 570 will certainly earn its keep, as precious few luxury SUVs can keep up with it on gnarly terrain." -- Edmunds
  • "The 8-passenger LX 570 is built to be as rugged as it is refined, with a sophisticated terrain-response system allowing it to traverse almost any obstacle." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Lexus LX 570 is essentially a mildly restyled version of the Toyota Land Cruiser. That mean's it's an old-school, full-size SUV that can tow like a pickup and venture off the pavement to remote places where few other vehicles dare tread." -- Left Lane News
