2013 Lexus LX Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2013 Lexus LX was new.

Performance: 8.0

Overall, test drivers are impressed with the 2013 Lexus LX 570's comfortable ride on pavement and its great capability on rough terrain. Some are also pleased with its smooth, quiet drivetrain and ample engine power. One of the LX's primary weaknesses is its fuel economy, which several reviewers note is low, even for the large SUV class.

  • "The overall driving experience is Lexus smooth and Lexus quiet." -- AutoWeek
  • "Few luxury SUVs handle on-road duties as well as the off-road ones like the LX. Plenty of power to tow or just go really fast. Refined and quiet, the epitome of Lexus luxury." -- Car and Driver
  • "The 2013 Lexus LX 570's calling card is its versatility." -- Edmunds
  • "And then there's the fuel economy. The trip computer read all of 13.7 mpg when I turned in the keys." -- Automobile Magazine

Acceleration and Power

The 2013 Lexus LX 570 is powered by a 5.7-liter V8 that produces 383 horsepower and 403 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed through a six-speed automatic transmission. According to the EPA, the LX achieves 12/17 mpg city/highway, which is a bit low for the class. The LX has a maximum towing capacity of 7,000 pounds.

Reviewers concur that for such a large, heavy SUV, the Lexus LX moves decently fast thanks to its powerful V8 and quick-shifting transmission.

  • "The drivetrain is very smooth, the automatic gearbox cracking off silky shifts; the big V8 easily moved all 6,000-pounds of LX 570 around without breaking a sweat. Merging and passing are easily done with a little more pressure on the throttle for a downshift and then impressive thrust." -- AutoWeek
  • "The powerful 5.7-liter V8 engine provides remarkable acceleration for such a large and heavy vehicle, and it makes quick work of towing tasks. Of course, you'll also likely get a fruit basket from ExxonMobil as a thank-you for all the gas you'll be buying." -- Edmunds
  • "Tipping the scales at about 6,000 lbs., the LX 570 is a gigantic vehicle, but the quick-shifting six-speed and torquey V8 propel it with more authority than one might expect. Moreover, the engine is absolutely silent at idle, rising to only a muffled growl as the tachometer tickles the upper reaches of the rev range." -- Left Lane News

Handling and Braking

Most reviewers are impressed with the 2013 Lexus LX 570's comfortable, refined ride. The LX's adaptive suspension system also earns praise. The adaptive suspension allows the driver to adjust suspension firmness between comfort, normal and sport settings. However, during a test drive through snow, one test driver says that the LX's brakes don't inspire a lot of confidence.

  • "Despite its body-on-frame construction and hefty weight, the LX 570 rides and handles well, with the electronically controlled suspension smoothing out bumps in everyday driving." -- Edmunds
  • "Luckily, 13.4" ventilated discs in the front and 13.6" ventilated discs in the rear are on hand to haul this yacht down from speed. For such a big vehicle, LX is pleasantly sure-footed, with controlled body roll around curves and a nicely planted feel. It is possible to push this Lexus through the curves at a good clip without feeling like you're pushing the limits. I'm sure it's also possible to push too hard, so discretion is necessary, but fun is still on the list of possibilities without tragedy intervening." -- Forbes
  • "Though large in size and with a 6,000-pound curb weight - that's several hundred pounds more than a Cadillac Escalade - the Lexus LX 570 feels planted on both freeways and curvy roads. Though it has rugged body-on-frame construction like a truck, the LX has a comfortable ride thanks to its Adaptive Variable Suspension. The system offers three driver-selectable modes: Comfort, Normal and Sport. The Comfort setting is good for everyday driving, while the Sport mode stiffens things up for a more spirited feel. The Normal mode is a happy medium." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "This big Bessie doesn't like to stop. Driving home during one of Michigan's mini blizzards, I found more confidence running my fingers across the LX's many drivetrain and suspension switches that sit below the shift lever than I did applying pressure to the brake pedal. I could climb out of a ditch with far less effort than I could manage to slow truck down as I approached an intersection thick with snow." -- Automobile Magazine

According to reviewers, off-roading is one of the 2013 Lexus LX 570's best abilities, and the LX comes with features that make traveling off the pavement much easier. The LX comes standard with Multi-Terrain Select, which features settings to optimize performance on various types of terrain. The LX’s settings are named rock, rock and dirt, mud and sand, loose rock and mogul. Another standard off-roading feature is crawl control, which automatically modulates the throttle and brakes when you're climbing uneven terrain so you can focus on steering and maneuvering.

  • "I love the fact that even though no sane person would off-road an $88,760 Lexus, there are enough switches, buttons, and dials for things like crawl control and 4-Low to conjure visions of scaling mountains and crossing deserts - which this truck will happily do." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Where this vehicle stands out from car-based crossover SUVs is in its off-road capabilities. More than just snow and dirt trails, the Lexus LX is built to tackle extreme terrain." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Once the pavement ends, the LX really comes into its own. Hampered only by its size and its low-hanging running boards, this vehicle feels otherwise unstoppable. We climbed moguls the size of Fiats and relied on the crawl control system to safely return us to ground level. As we've said about similar systems in Land Rovers and Jeeps, off roading a luxury vehicle is almost too easy these days - at least for those lucky few who venture down the road less traveled." -- Left Lane News
