2016 Lexus LS Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.5

Automotive journalists say the 2016 Lexus LS has a luxurious cabin with top-notch materials and exceptional build quality. The front seats are spacious and supportive, and the rear seats are even more roomy and comfortable. Lexus' Remote Touch controller, which functions like a computer mouse, operates the infotainment system, but it is difficult and distracting to use. The LS offers more trunk space than many rivals.

  • "The Lexus LS interior is proof that if you put in the effort you can get as close to perfect as imaginable. There is not a stitch out of place, not a flaw from headliner fit to carpet thread." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "This big Lexus sedan's cabin is meticulously appointed and carefully assembled. The leather is supple, the wood trim warm and rich and the rest of the interior materials substantial and attractive." -- Edmunds
  • "Passenger room is plentiful, especially for the rear occupants, and ultra-high-quality leather and wood is employed throughout the cabin." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "All the materials are of the highest quality, and craftsmanship is top-notch, and any place the driver touches is padded or polished." -- Car and Driver (2013)

Seating

The 2016 LS seats five and comes standard with leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and a power tilting and telescoping steering wheel. Optional features include a heated steering wheel, a power rear sunshade, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, and power-adjustable and massaging rear seats. The optional Executive Class Seating package also includes a reclining passenger-side rear seat, a rear-seat tray table, and a rear center cooled console box, which reduces seating capacity to four.

The front seats are roomy and can be adjusted to support any body shape. The rear seats are even more comfortable and spacious, especially in models equipped with the Executive Class Seating package.

  • "The ultimate in rear-passenger sumptuousness is found in the Executive Class package. The right-rear seat reclines, there's vibrating and shiatsu massage, a Blu-ray entertainment system and a wood-trimmed console table, making it as luxurious as any ride that's not in a corporate jet." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Seat comfort … is simply outstanding up front, with wonderfully sculpted, multi-adjustable front buckets that can accommodate a variety of body types. Things get even better in back, especially on LS 460 L models, as the options list contains features that would be the envy of a day spa, including a massaging rear seat with near full recline and a powered ottoman." -- Edmunds
  • "The seats are gloriously supportive and highly adjustable to suit individual physiques." -- AutoTrader (2014)
  • "Spacious and comfortable up front, there's also generous room across in the back of the quiet cabin." -- Consumer Guide (2014)

Interior Features

The 2016 LS 460 comes standard with a 12.3-inch infotainment display, Lexus' Remote Touch controller, navigation, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD radio, Bluetooth, a USB port, a power moonroof, a rearview camera, and front and rear parking sensors. Optional features include quad-zone automatic climate control, a 19-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system, a rear-seat entertainment system, Lexus Enform Remote smartphone integration, active lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, driver drowsiness monitoring, and forward collision warning with automatic braking.

The Remote Touch controller, which functions like a computer mouse, is too sensitive to movements. This makes it difficult to use and can pull the driver's attention from the road. Still, it is easy to reach from the driver's seat. Both the standard and optional audio systems deliver excellent sound quality.

  • "However useful Remote Touch is for integrating basic tasks and smartphone applications, it ultimately draws too much attention away from the road (even with the new ‘back’ and ‘menu’ buttons added for 2016)." -- Edmunds
  • "The console is designed to let the right hand rest comfortably over the mouse, but the device can be touchy and quick to jump away from the spot where you want to click on a setting selection. Getting back to the desired spot on the screen can divert driver attention." -- Consumer Guide (2014)
  • "Audio usually pours out of a 10-speaker stereo system, which has been upgraded with a new digital amp for 2013 for better power consumption. It sounds pretty good when fed compressed digital audio from HD Radio or USB-stored MP3s, but I was also given a listen to the 19-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio option with a DVD source and found it to be fantastically detailed." -- CNET (2013)
  • "Controlling this screen is the company's 'Remote Touch Interface,' a joystick-like device mounted on the center console. As I've mentioned in previous reviews of other Lexus' (Lexi?) with this device, it's wise in theory, but frustrating in the real world." -- The Los Angeles Times (2013)

Cargo

The 2016 Lexus LS has 18 cubic feet of cargo room in its trunk, which is above average for the class. The LS Hybrid has 10.1 cubic feet of trunk space, which is less cargo room than most rivals offer, including the plug-in hybrid Mercedes-Benz S550e. A power trunk lid is optional.

Though the Lexus LS has more trunk space than the average super luxury car, the shape of the trunk limits its usefulness. If you need a large trunk, make sure the space works for you when you test drive the LS.

  • "Trunk space is generous at 18 cubic feet." -- Edmunds
  • The trunk is wide, but not overly long, so luggage capacity is acceptable but not exceptional. Similarly, interior storage is OK." -- Consumer Guide (2014)
