2012 Lexus LS Overview

The 2012 Lexus LS 460 continues to offer an exceptional amount of luxury at a price that undercuts much of the competition. However, if you’re looking for a luxury sedan with athletic handling, the LS falls short of rivals such as the BMW 7-Series and Porsche Panamera.

Coming up short on performance doesn’t make the 2012 LS a horrible pick, as its high-quality interior and comfort-tuned ride should suit many shoppers just fine, especially shoppers who demand value. “LS base prices start below those of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8,” says Consumer Guide. “It is more comfort-oriented than those German rivals, but Lexus' flagship is a Best Buy for its power, refinement, standard features, and optional gadgets.”

The LS is an impressive highway cruiser and an ultra-comfortable place to spend a commute. For many, that may make the Lexus LS the best choice among super luxury cars. Its luxuriously appointed interior isn’t just eye-catching, it’s comfortable as well. However, if you need more space to coddle your passengers, the extended-wheelbase LS 460L offers even more back-seat room.

Other Cars to Consider

The Lexus LS is one of the least expensive cars in its class. If you’re not looking to break the bank, and want a super luxury car with athletic handling, consider the BMW 7-Series. The base 7-Series will cost a bit more, and isn’t quite as powerful as the LS, but the 7-Series does get better fuel economy.

While the 7-Series offers sport sedan handling, it may be too hard-edged if you’re shopping for comfort. If that’s the case, check out the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Regardless of which model you choose, the S-Class will cost significantly more than the LS, but reviewers love the S-Class’ composed ride, spacious interior and various engine options.

Lexus LS: The Details

The 2012 Lexus LS comes in two body styles: the Lexus LS 460 and the extended-wheelbase LS 460L. Both are available with rear- or optional all-wheel drive. A long-wheelbase hybrid version, the Lexus LS 600h L, is reviewed separately. The Lexus LS sees no significant changes for 2012. See the full 2012 Lexus LS specs.

  • "If you equate luxury with isolation and peace, then the LS460 may be the sedan for you. Impeccable build quality and a driving experience that is more like a riding experience are guaranteed." -- Car and Driver
  • "Any of the LS variants is built with a comfort bias, which isn't a bad thing in a luxury sedan." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "When it comes to premium luxury sedans, a car needs to excel in certain categories. Such a flagship needs to deliver performance, comfort, refinement, craftsmanship and a long list of high-tech features. On its own, the … Lexus LS 460 easily satisfies these requirements, especially in the quality of the ownership experience it offers. But when stacked up next to European luxury cars, it still comes up a little sedate." -- Edmunds
  • "Unlike the sport sedan bias of the 7 Series, the Lexus LS is geared toward comfort and a posh interior." -- Motor Trend
