Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Lexus IS was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.3

Test drivers praise the 2016 Lexus IS’ cabin for its handsome styling and upscale materials, including standard leatherette upholstery and appealing accents. Reviewers agree that the IS' front seats are supportive and comfortable in most situations, and its back seats have sufficient space for two adults. The majority of reviewers think the mouse-like joystick used for navigation and infotainment functions is difficult to manipulate, but they add that other dashboard controls are simple to control. The Lexus IS has a good amount of trunk space for the class.

  • "Even with the somber, all-black colorway and not-actually-leather NuLuxe seating, I dig the IS' interior design. With matte surfaces in place of glossy and brushed metal in place of chrome, it has a kind of retro-futuristic vibe that strikes me as pleasingly Japanese. I like the look of the moving-bezel gauge cluster, too." -- Autoblog
  • "As expected, the detail fit-and-finish is precisely impeccable. The Lexus LFA-inspired gauges in F Sport models, with their digital instrument cluster and sliding bezel, are attractive but difficult to justify, based on the costs of the F packages." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "We like the upscale materials used in the 2016 Lexus IS." -- Edmunds
  • "Inside, every IS features a dashboard that feels well put together even at the entry level, but also has a very premium feel when equipped with optional upgrades." -- CNET (2014)

Seating

The 2016 Lexus IS sedan seats five and comes standard with leatherette upholstery. Leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a power tilt and telescoping steering wheel and a heated steering wheel are available. Most people will find the front seats comfortable and supportive, reviewers say, and they note that rear seats have a good amount of space for a couple of adults.

  • "Front passengers are comfortable, and rear legroom is acceptable, if not great." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "An LFA-inspired, driver-focused cockpit gets you in the mood to blast off, such as you can with this particular ride, and a quilted driver's seat offers snug comfort and decent lateral support." -- Forbes
  • "The front seats are comfortable and supportive under most circumstances, though enthusiast drivers might prefer additional bolstering (even with the F Sport seats). In back, two adults can sit with ease thanks to nicely shaped outboard seats and a respectable amount of legroom." -- Edmunds
  • "Provided you're not too broad abeam, the seats are quite comfortable and nicely cup backs and backsides." -- Car and Driver (2014)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2016 Lexus IS include a moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, Bluetooth, iPhone integration with Siri voice recognition, an eight-speaker stereo, a 7-inch display screen, satellite radio and two USB ports. Options include navigation with Lexus' Remote Touch controller, a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic pre-collision braking, a 15-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound audio system and a one-year trial subscription to Lexus Enform Remote, which allows you to use a smartphone app to remotely start, lock and unlock the car, as well as control climate settings.

While some critics think the joystick that controls the navigation and infotainment systems is easy to use, others find it difficult to navigate the on-screen menu. Most reviewers report that the other dashboard controls, including the touch-sensitive climate controls, are simple to operate.

  • "Sadly, using the joystick controller to move through the menu system is a drag. The selector bounces all over the screen, like an old wired mouse with a dirty laser sensor." -- Autoblog
  • "The Lexus IS instrument panel has a family resemblance to that of the Lexus GS sedan, and the conventional and touch-sensitive switches are all easy to find and use. We particularly like the familiarity and friendly operation of the mouse-like controller for the infotainment system." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Dual-zone automatic climate control with touch-sensitive electrostatic switches are easy to use and a 4.2-inch full color multi-information display including audio, trip, navigation, phone, [and] ambient temperature is clear and attractive." -- Forbes
  • "The only real foible here is the mouselike Remote Touch interface that comes with the navigation system. Cursor control is imprecise, particularly when you're on the move, and it doesn't help that there's no hard ‘back’ button and the icons are all the same color. Fortunately, the voice controls work well for many infotainment functions." -- Edmunds

Cargo

The 2016 Lexus IS sedan has 13.8 cubic feet of trunk space, which is more than most cars in the class. Reviewers note that the back seats fold forward to increase cargo-carrying capacity.

  • "Trunk capacity in the IS is an above-average 13.8 cubic feet, and the rear seatbacks fold down to open up additional space." -- Edmunds
