2014 Lexus IS Overview

Is the 2014 Lexus IS a Good Used Car?

The 2014 Lexus IS is a solid used luxury car. It balances cornering agility with a pleasant ride. It also has a high-quality cabin, above-average reliability, and advanced safety features. It’s a good pick in this class, but it faces strong competition from sportier rivals.

The Lexus comes with a 204-horsepower 2.5-liter V6 (IS 250) or a 306-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 (IS 350). Both are available with six-speed automatic transmissions and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel-drive IS 350 only gets an eight-speed automatic. Both transmissions have smooth shifts. The IS 250’s V6 has disappointing acceleration and fuel economy (up to 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway). The IS 350 moves quicker, without a big drop in efficiency (19/28 mpg city/highway). Both models offer an excellent balance of ride comfort and sporty handling.

The Lexus IS seats five and pairs leatherette upholstery with comfortable front seats. Leather is available, as are sport seats with larger side bolsters. The Lexus’ cabin offers sufficient headroom and legroom in both rows for adults. There are two full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors in the second row. The rear seats split 60/40. When folded, they increase the car’s cargo capacity to 13.8 cubic feet.

The IS’ dashboard is well-designed and has high-quality materials. Climate and audio controls are straightforward, and some use touch-sensitive sliders. All other infotainment functions run though the 7-inch screen. Its menu structure is simple, but the mouselike controller is awkward to use while driving. Standard features include Bluetooth connectivity, a USB input, HD Radio with traffic and weather updates, satellite radio, eight speakers, and user-friendly voice recognition. Options include navigation and a superb 15-speaker Mark Levinson sound system.

How Reliable Is the 2014 Lexus IS?

The 2014 Lexus IS has above-average reliability, earning a good score of 3.5 out of five from J.D. Power and Associates. Class leaders for reliability include the 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series.

How Safe Is the IS?

The 2014 Lexus IS rates highly for safety. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the IS sedan a score of Good, the highest rating possible, in all three crash tests. The IS earned a score of Advanced, the third-highest, for its crash avoidance equipment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the IS a perfect five-star rating in overall, side, and rollover crash testing, as well as four stars in front impact testing.

Many advanced safety features are available in the 2014 IS, including a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning with brake assist.

Should I Consider Another Used IS?

Lexus fully redesigned the IS sedan for 2014. It marks the first year of the car’s third generation. If you’re looking to buy a used IS sedan with this body style, the 2014 model offers the best value. The IS saw only minimal updates for 2015, followed by new trim levels and more powerful engines for 2016.

Which Used Lexus IS Is Right for Me?

The 2014 Lexus IS 250 and IS 350 share the same standard features, including a 7-inch infotainment screen and a moonroof. Available features include a rearview camera, a suite of active safety features, heated and ventilated front seats, and an F Sport package with sport seats and an adaptive suspension.

Look for models equipped with Lexus’ active safety features, such as blind spot monitoring. These systems can help you avoid an accident. If you desire more exciting performance, look for a used IS 350 with the F Sport package.

Consider buying a certified pre-owned Lexus IS. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Lexus extends its original new-car warranty to cover six years or unlimited mileage. Lexus puts its CPO vehicles through a 165-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Lexus warranty page carefully.

2014 Lexus IS and Other Cars to Consider

Lexus sold the redesigned 2014 IS 250 and 350 sedans alongside two other models with the IS name: the IS C convertible and the V8-powered IS F. Both of these models are carry-overs from the previous generation, and neither can match the interior refinement, ride quality, or features of the redesigned IS. If you’re shopping for a convertible or V8 sports sedan, you’ll find better alternatives in this class than the IS C and IS F.

Which Is Better: 2014 Lexus IS or 2014 Lexus ES?

If you’re looking for a more luxurious experience, the midsize Lexus ES offers two key advantages over the smaller Lexus IS. The ES has an exceptionally smooth ride and much more spacious rear seats. It also earns a perfect reliability rating. The ES’ trade-off is handling. In comparison to the IS’ nimble cornering, the ES’ steering feels numb. Both sedans have upscale interiors and many advanced safety features, though both also share the same awkward infotainment controller. As long as you aren’t looking to keep up with sports cars, the ES is the better pick.

Which Is Better: 2014 Lexus IS or 2014 BMW 3 Series?

The BMW 3 Series has long been the sedan to beat in the luxury small car class. The 3 Series tops or matches the Lexus in most comparisons. It has a roomier trunk and rear seats, better fuel economy, a much simpler infotainment system, and a slightly higher reliability rating. Both the 3 Series and IS have handsome interiors, as well as plenty of high-tech convenience and advanced safety features. The BMW offers zippier engine response and sharper handling; however, it can’t quite match the poised ride quality of the IS. All in all, both sedans are good options, but the BMW is the better car.

Which Is Better: 2014 Lexus IS or 2014 Audi A4?

The 2014 Audi A4 and Lexus IS have a similar appeal. Neither is the sportiest option in the class, but both strike an excellent balance between ride comfort and nimble handling. Both also have above-average reliability. The IS offers substantially more advanced safety features, including forward collision warning with brake assist. Still, the A4 takes a slight edge overall with its simpler infotainment system and more robust engine performance. The Audi is the better pick.
