2019 Lexus GX Interior Review

Interior: 7.0

The 2019 Lexus GX 460 has a premium but dated cabin. Build quality is top-notch, but the cockpit styling is chunky, and an abundance of physical buttons crowd the center stack. The second-row seats get uncomfortable during longer trips, and the third row is best left for children. Total cargo space is smaller than what many 3-row SUVs offer.

  • The interior of the GX is pleasing to look at thanks to an impressive combination of rich materials and textures. It is well-built and durable, too." -- Edmunds
  • The interior frankly lacks the top-quality materials that have become a Lexus hallmark over the years. In particular, the dashboard doesn't look or feel like it belongs in a vehicle that costs more than $50,000. Still, everything seems well put together, and the electroluminescent gauges serve as a reminder that this is more than just a fancy Toyota." -- Autotrader (2017)

The base Lexus GX 460 seats seven people, and it comes standard with synthetic leather upholstery and 10-way power-adjustable front seats. Full leather upholstery, ventilated and heated front seats, heated second-row outboard seats, power-folding third-row seats, and a heated steering wheel are available. You can also get second-row captain’s chairs, though that lowers seating capacity to six.

There’s plenty of head- and legroom in the first row, and the second row has enough space for most adults to sit comfortably for short trips, but it feels less comfortable on longer trips. The third row is best left to kids. For installing child safety seats, there are two sets of lower anchors and three tethers located in the second row.

  • There's plenty of leg- and headroom up front. Middle-row headroom is generous, and legroom is fine if the driver is shorter than 6-foot-3, but the rear doors crowd your elbows. The third row is tight and best for kids and short trips only." -- Edmunds
  • Front-seat comfort is terrific, the second row is adequate for adults and the third best for children." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "The standard third-row seat is mounted low, so longer-legged passengers will likely have their knees in their faces. The second row isn't particularly supportive or comfortable, either. For anyone planning to use more than two rows on a regular basis, purpose-built people carriers such as minivans or the Ford Flex with EcoBoost could be a better choice." -- Autotrader (2017)

Interior Features

Standard features in the base GX include a moonroof, push-button start, proximity keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-inch touch screen, Amazon Alexa smartphone connectivity, HD Radio, satellite radio, a nine-speaker stereo, two USB ports, Bluetooth, and Siri Eyes Free. A rearview camera comes standard too.

Available features include a navigation system, a 17-speaker premium stereo, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, and the Lexus Enform App Suite for added smartphone connectivity options, such as iHeartRadio and Yelp.

Available safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a driver attention monitor, adaptive cruise control, a wide-view front and side camera, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and automatic high beams.

While the infotainment interface is straightforward, its graphics and abundance of buttons make the system feel dated.

  • Superb sound quality from the premium audio system, which also has HD radio. But the navigation graphics are dated – they're quite low-resolution, and the traffic density lines are comically thick." -- Edmunds
  • While the central control panel has many buttons, they're clearly marked in large white type, so there are no ergonomic missteps." -- Autotrader (2017)
  • "Instrumentation is easy to see and controls easy to reach but there are lots of them; the instrument panel's center stack contains the sound and climate systems and in the center console are controls for the 4-wheel-drive system." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

This Lexus has a smaller cargo hold than other 3-row SUVs, with 11.6 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 46.7 cubic feet behind the second row, and a total of 64.7 cubic feet behind the front-row seats. The liftgate opens toward the passenger side rather than raising up, like most SUVs’ rear hatches. This makes it tricky to load cargo from the curb, though the flip-up window in the hatch lets you load small cargo without opening the tailgate.

  • The second and third rows of seats fold flat into the floor, but max cargo capacity isn't class-leading. That's probably because the load floor of this traditional body-on-frame SUV is a bit high." -- Edmunds
  • The unusual tailgate is hinged on the passenger side, so it opens toward the curb on American roads. Not the most convenient design for curbside loading, but it does have a flip-up window." -- Autotrader (2017)
  • Some may like, some may dislike the rear door; it's a side-opening arrangement, hinged on the right, which can make loading from curbside awkward and is inconvenient when carrying long stuff home from the lumberyard." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
