2012 Lexus GX Overview

Reviewers said the 2012 Lexus GX 460’s V8 engine has ample power in most situations, though some noted that the GX’s acceleration at highway speeds isn't especially impressive. A six-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive are standard. The 2012 GX gets an EPA-estimated 15/20 mpg city/highway, which is good for a four-wheel drive large SUV. Test drivers said the GX’s handling isn’t very composed. They mentioned that there is quite a bit of body lean during cornering and the steering feels numb. Reviewers said that the GX is a capable off-roader, and it is available with off-road driving aids like Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control, where the throttle and brake are automatically applied at a pre-set speed so the driver can focus on steering.

Most critics liked the 2012 GX 460’s first-rate cabin materials and build quality. The Lexus GX seats seven in three rows. Reviewers wrote that the GX’s front seats are very comfortable, but some noted that the second-row seats aren't very comfortable. As with most three-row SUVs, critics said the third row is cramped. The GX has a maximum of 91.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which is a bit low for a three-row large SUV. Critics said the GX's side-hinged tailgate can make it difficult to load cargo from the curb. Standard features in the 2012 Lexus GX include a moonroof, leather upholstery, front seats that are heated, ventilated and power-adjustable, a 115-volt power outlet in the rear cargo area, a rearview camera, a nine-speaker audio system, satellite radio, a USB port and Bluetooth. Available features include navigation, adaptive cruise control, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, a rear-seat entertainment system, front- and sideview cameras, tri-zone automatic climate control, heated second-row outboard seats, a driver attention monitor and lane departure warning.

Other SUVs to Consider

The 2012 Cadillac Escalade has a traditional, top-hinged liftgate and excellent cargo capacity for the class. Auto journalists said it has a powerful V8 engine and great on-road handling for a large SUV.

Test drivers agreed that the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover has tremendous off-road prowess, as well as a very smooth ride and composed handling on pavement. Automotive journalists raved about the Range Rover’s handsome interior, rich leather upholstery and wood trim.
