2011 Lexus GX Overview

Based on the 2011 Toyota 4Runner, the 2011 Lexus GX 460 is a brawny three-row SUV that’s extremely capable off-road. Its interior has an attractive design, great build quality and tons of standard and optional features. When it was new, reviewers said anyone looking for a tough SUV with a luxurious interior should be sure to consider the Lexus GX.

However, the GX’s off-road strength comes with some compromises. Its body-on-frame construction may help it plow through muddy trails, but it detracts significantly from the GX’s handling on paved roads and maneuverability in close quarters. The GX’s V8 engine gets poor fuel economy for the class, and test drivers said its third row of seats is cramped. Standard features include a nine-speaker stereo system with Bluetooth audio streaming, leather upholstery and heated and cooled front seats, while the options list includes features like tri-zone automatic climate control, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, more upscale leather and front- and sideview cameras.

In general, the 2011 Lexus GX is great at providing luxurious accommodations paired with real off-road ability. If you don’t plan to take your luxury SUV off-roading, you’ll likely be much happier with a luxury crossover instead.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2011 Audi Q7 has three rows of seats, good safety ratings and an available six-cylinder diesel engine. Of course, the Audi Q7 can’t tackle backwoods trails like the Lexus GX, but reviewers said its standard all-wheel drive is up to most tasks owners will ask of it. It’s also more comfortable to drive on-road.

If you want to preserve some of the GX’s off-road abilities but want an SUV that rides better on the pavement, consider the 2011 Mercedes-Benz M-Class. The M-Class offers a variety of engine options, ranging from a fuel-efficient diesel to a powerful, but gas-guzzling, V8. Reviewers said the M-Class’ interior is attractive and high-quality, and there’s even an available AMG model for enthusiasts who still need to get the kids to soccer practice.
