2009 Lexus GX Overview

Based on the 2009 Toyota 4Runner, the 2009 Lexus GX 470 mixes Lexus luxury with Toyota DNA. The GX can seat up to eight when equipped with available third-row seats, and it has the same fantastic off-road capabilities. When it was new, test drivers loved the GX’s comfortable, upscale cabin.

The 2009 Lexus GX 470 rides on truck-based architecture, which means it has great towing and off-roading abilities, but also a crude, rough ride and more body roll than most competitors. Like the 4Runner, the GX also has poor fuel economy compared with most midsize SUVs. Its third row isn’t as comfortable as many competitors’, and the GX doesn’t offer as much cargo or passenger space, either. Overall, the Lexus GX 470 is an excellent choice for buyers who want luxury and off-road capability, but most buyers will likely be better served by a luxury crossover instead.

Standard features on the 2009 Lexus GX 470 include an adaptive suspension system, leather, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control and a sunroof. An upgraded stereo, navigation, Bluetooth and a rear-seat entertainment system were available options when the GX 470 was new.

Other Cars to Consider

If you don’t need the Lexus GX’s off-road abilities, consider the 2009 Acura MDX. It’s a sporty crossover that seats seven and has plenty of room for cargo and passengers. The MDX isn’t able to tow as much or drive off-road as well, but the MDX rides more comfortably on the road and gets better fuel economy.

Shoppers who want an SUV with better fuel economy than the Lexus GX without sacrificing much interior space should also consider the 2009 Mercedes-Benz M-Class. One of the M-Class’ most appealing features is its available diesel engine, which gets great fuel economy and adds all-wheel drive to the list of standard features.
