2020 Lexus GS Performance Review

Performance: 7.4

The 2020 Lexus GS is enjoyable to drive, with a nice mix of comfort and sportiness. It also features two potent engine choices, and its higher trims tout an even sportier ride. However, the GS' fuel efficiency is a little subpar for the class.

  • "After considerable time behind the wheel of a new Lexus GS 350 sedan, we found it to be a likable and competent performance sedan with impressive acceleration, cornering and braking response. It's fun to drive and absolutely luxurious." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Overall performance was very good on both dry and wet pavement. The pedal felt firm and reassuring and easy to modulate." -- Consumer Reports
  • "The … Lexus GS delivers a convincing blend of comfort and performance." -- Edmunds (2016)

Acceleration and Power

The GS 350 and F Sport trims come with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes a hearty 311 horsepower. The rear-wheel-drive GS 350 and F Sport come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and deliver a slightly below-average 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. All-wheel-drive models have a six-speed automatic transmission and get 1 less mpg in the city and 2 less mpg on the highway.

The top-of-the-line GS F comes with a 5.0-liter V8 that produces 467 horsepower, and this model can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. That's loads of power and quick acceleration, but compared to the base model, the GS F is a lot costlier and much worse on gas. The GS F only comes with rear-wheel drive and delivers 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

  • "The GS 350’s smooth V6 delivers impressive power for passing and merging." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The standard V6 has been a longstanding fixture in the GS engine bay, but it's still a gem, delivering direct-injected thrust with vigor and refinement. The 8-speed automatic (RWD only) helps the engine stay in its sweet spot during acceleration, but also contributes to decent fuel economy." -- Autotrader (2019)
  • "The GS 350 has a punchy V6 powertrain and is linked to a smooth transmission." -- Consumer Reports (2017)

Handling and Braking

With a relaxed ride and agile handling, the GS delivers an engaging drive. Beyond offering rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, the F Sport and F trims have adaptable suspensions that add Sport and Sport + modes to the standard Drive Mode Select system.

  • "A lightweight aluminum suspension coupled with a wide track and big tire/wheel combination all contribute to the GS feeling like it’s a much smaller and more nimble vehicle." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Lexus GS 300 is nimble and moves out nicely, but it's also effortlessly smooth and poised" -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "Engaging to drive, the car's good handling and taut yet supple ride fare well against German rivals." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
