2014 Lexus GS Hybrid Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Lexus GS Hybrid was new.

Interior: 7.7

Critics agree that the interior of the 2014 Lexus GS Hybrid features an elegant design and first-rate materials, including silver accents on the dash, rich wood trim and sumptuous leather upholstery. However, reviewers note that the Remote Touch interface, which controls the infotainment system, can be difficult to use.

  • "In the best Lexus tradition, the GS 350h features a finely crafted interior marked by soft leather and rich wood and aluminum trim." -- Edmunds
  • "The interior is notably richer than before, and there are padded surfaces covered in stitched leather on the dash, the sides of the console, the center armrest, and the door panels." -- Automobile Magazine (2013)
  • "Also rendered using model-specific elements highlighted by even richer leather and wood trims, all versions benefit from superior isolation from road and wind noise, an improved driving position, more comfortable and supportive front buckets, better rear seat room and significantly increased trunk capacity, even in the GS 450h Hybrid." -- Kelley Blue Book (2013)
  • "If the outside draws shoppers in, the interior will wow them. I don't normally go gaga over interior design, especially in a Lexus, but the thin silver strip in the center of the dash where a CD is inserted - does anyone still bring CDs into cars? - sets the table." -- Cars.com (2013)

The 2014 Lexus GS Hybrid seats five and comes standard with leather upholstery and heated and ventilated, 10-way, power-adjustable front seats. Available features include heated rear seats and 18-way, power-adjustable front seats. Reviewers say that the front seats are generously sized, supportive and comfortable, as you’d expect from a luxury sport sedan. They write that the back seats offer enough head- and legroom for most adults, but there isn’t much foot space under the front seats. Some note that competitors like the BMW 5-Series offer more back-seat room overall.

  • "Befitting this caliber of luxury sport sedan are seats that are firm and cosseting in equal measure, and limited only by the degree of power adjustments you choose. In back, two average-sized adults should be pretty comfortable, though the BMW 5 Series is roomier still." -- Edmunds
  • "Rear-seat space has improved slightly and offers good headroom and generous knee clearance, but footroom under the front seats is tight." -- Automobile Magazine (2013)
  • "Six-footers have ample legroom and, at worst adequate, headroom. The seats are very comfortable, and the standard power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel helps fine tune the driving position." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "These seats aren't just for skinny drivers, either, with plenty of thigh support and nice wide seat bottoms and backs." -- Cars.com (2013)

Interior Features

The 2014 Lexus GS Hybrid comes standard with a rearview camera, a USB port, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, satellite radio, a 12-speaker surround-sound audio system and an infotainment system with an 8-inch display and Lexus’ Remote Touch interface, which is a mouse-like controller used to access audio and navigation settings. Available features include a navigation system with a 12.3-inch display, a Mark Levinson 17-speaker premium surround-sound audio system, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Many critics think the Remote Touch interface is harder to use than knob-based systems found in Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW vehicles. They are very impressed with the sound quality of the optional Mark Levinson audio system, as well as the 12.3-inch display that comes with the available navigation system, saying it is large enough to accommodate split-screen displays, so it can display vehicle information on one side and navigation maps or Internet features on the other.

  • "That said, we do like the impressively large 12-inch display that comes with the optional navigation system as well as the optional Mark Levinson audio system, which sounds fantastic." -- Edmunds
  • "The Lexus Remote Touch mouse controller has been improved, in that you now simply push down on it to select ‘enter’ rather than pushing a button on the side, although it still requires more concentration to use than most knob-style controllers." -- Automobile Magazine (2013)
  • "All models tested had the available navigation system. It and most audio functions are governed by a computer mouse-like controller mounted on the console. It is fairly intuitive to use, but like other systems that control so many functions, acclimation is required." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "It's a stunning system that switches between the full-screen menu and a split-screen with 8 inches of navigation and 4.3 inches of system information. The left, 8-inch portion can also display music and apps, including Pandora internet radio and a Bing search feature." -- Cars.com (2013)

The 2014 Lexus GS Hybrid has 13.2 cubic feet of trunk space, which is 1.1 cubic feet less than the space in the gas-only model. The GS Hybrid’s trunk is small for a luxury large car, but most critics think it is a decent size for a hybrid sedan. Like the gas-only GS, the GS Hybrid does not have folding rear seats to expand trunk space. A power trunk lid is a new option for 2014.

  • "Lexus also repackaged the hybrid battery so it doesn't take up as much trunk space as the previous generation's; the hybrid now has a respectable 13.2 cubic feet." -- Cars.com (2013)
  • "Trunk space is not particularly generous, especially in the hybrid, but the cargo hold is wide and easily accessed." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
