2007 Lexus GS Hybrid Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2007 Lexus GS Hybrid was new.

Interior: 8.2

Reviewers generally agree, the GS 450 Hybrid interior is almost flawlessly designed, with comfort, tech features and attention to detail. Although the seating is noted as comfortable for four to five adults, many test drivers conclude that the headroom in the front seat may be an issue for some taller occupants, and that the back seat can be somewhat tight and restrictive.

The Lexus cabin is simple to navigate and has an outstanding level of luxury. Forbes chimes, "Lexus has done this right," with its "handsome interior." Detroit News calls the cabin of the GS 450 Hybrid "classic Lexus with nothing fake and plenty of amenities."

Car and Driver describes the Lexus interior as "beautifully finished" and " excelling in small details", adding that "enhanced by a touch-screen secondary-control collective that makes those of the other cars seem even more unnecessarily complicated." The Detroit News "strongly agrees with this assessment, adding that "the cabin is definitely classic Lexus, with lots of leather and real wood -- nothing fake here -- and plenty of amenities....I'd say there are probably more luxury features on the GS 450h than on a comparably equipped 5 Series [BMW]."The Minneapolis Star Tribune adds that the GS 450 Hybrid features "the highest level of standard luxury equipment and includes features that are optional."

The GS 450 Hybrid is a luxury sedan, offering room for five adults. Auto writers agree that overall seating is comfortable, yet a handful of reviews find space a bit tight if you are tall. Forbes reports that that "comfort level is top-notch, with accommodating leather seats, substantial headroom and legroom up front for average-size occupants," while taller riders may find front seat headroom restricted. The Austin American-Statesman calls the Lexus seating both "plush and supportive." Autobytel notes that although there is enough legroom upfront, "hip room felt somewhat constrained." From the driver's seat, auto writers agree that the level of luxury and convenience in the 2007 Lexus GS Hybrid is superb. BusinessWeek reports that the Lexus' "interior is well-designed and beautifully laid out", while Kelley Blue Book calls the luxury features and controls of the GS 450 Hybrid "user-friendly," with dials and gauges "within easy reach and laid out in a clean configuration." Yet, Forbes notes that shorter riders may find the "high dashboard and windowsills hamper their outward visibility".

Auto reviewers agree that although the GS 450 Hybrid is a comfortable ride, the backseat may be a squeeze. Forbes says "taller riders may not find enough backseat legroom," calling it "snug for taller occupants." The Austin American-Statesman observes that the rear seat is actually "sufficient only for two passengers," but they are very comfortably accommodated."

Interior Features

The GS 450 Hybrid comes standard with perforated leather 10-way control power seats with lumbar support for the driver and front passenger that are heated and ventilated with a multi-stage fan.In addition, the Lexus Memory System allows the driver and front passenger to control seat adjustments, mirror and steering wheel adjustments and recall each individual setting.Other standard features include height-adjustable headrests for all seating positions, carpeted floor mats, a power rear sunshade and foldable front-door storage pockets. The Lexus also has cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, a backup camera with full-color display, SmartAccess remote keyless entry and ignition and a moonroof.

Stereo and Entertainment

The GS 450 Hybrid comes standard with a Lexus Premium Sound System with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer. The vehicle can optionally be fitted with an optional 14-speaker, 330-watt Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound Audio System, which auto reviewers almost universally praise. CNET finds the upgraded system "impressive as much for its excellent sound quality as it is for its broad range of 3-letter functions: from its ability to play MP3 and WMA-encoded CDs to its ASP (automatic sound leveling) and DSP (digital sound processing)." MSN calls the optional audio package "excellent", and Forbes calls this an option "worth splurging" on.

The GS 450 Hybrid has an optional Lexus voice-activated DVD Navigation System, which testers generally find appealing for its crisp graphics, yet are divided on its simplicity, or lack thereof. CNET finds the voice-activation system challenging, recommending that destinations be programmed by hand using the touch screen on the high-resolution display. In contrast MSN finds the navigation system "easy to use," but also notes complications with the voice-activation feature. Forbes observes that the 2007 Lexus GS Hybrid navigation is "more difficult to operate than a simple series of buttons and switches", but Car and Driver wisely notes that the Lexus navigation is "infinitely simpler to use than BMWs iDrive or the Mercedes COMAND system."

The GS 450 Hybrid comes equipped with 7.5 cubic feet of cargo space, which auto reviewers are mixed about, because in comparison to the non-hybrid Lexus (and most every vehicle in its class), the trunk space on the Lexus is meager. Edmunds reports that "four suitcases or golf bags would be nearly impossible to fit in the GS 450h's trunk." Yet, Forbes calls the trunk space "sufficient," citing that it can accommodate two sets of golf clubs. MSN finds the cargo space " fairly large and has a low, wide opening, but there are no folding rear seatbacks to enlarge the cargo area."
