2018 Lexus ES Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2018 Lexus ES was new.

Interior: 7.0

The 2018 Lexus ES has plenty of premium materials and a top-notch interior design. The seats are comfortable, and there is ample passenger room. Trunk space is about average for the segment. Despite a long list of standard features, some optional amenities are hard to use, such as the optional infotainment controller.

  • "The 2018 Lexus ES 350 luxury sedan boasts upscale interior materials and the exacting fit and finish we've come to expect in Lexus vehicles." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The dashboard features high-tech instrumentation set among modern lines that also come across as classy. Material quality is excellent, and some surfaces even have exposed stitching." -- Autotrader (2017)
  • "The … Lexus ES 350's cabin is modern and stylish. . . .The richness of the materials varies depending on whether you opt for leather or stick with the standard perforated vinyl, but either way, the build quality is excellent." -- Edmunds (2017)

The Lexus ES seats five on standard leatherette seats and comes with 10-way power-adjustable front seats. Optional upgrades include leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a heated steering wheel, and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. The ES has two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in its second row. The lower anchors are easy to find and require little effort to attach the car-seat straps.

Most reviewers find the ES’ front seats comfortable enough. Rear-seat space is excellent, with ample legroom even for tall passengers. Models with the panoramic moonroof offer a little less headroom.

  • "The seats are comfortable and the interior is roomy enough for four adults. Rear-seat legroom is ample." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Space is ample all around, and 6-footers will be quite content in the comfy front seats. Rear seat legroom, in particular, is very impressive, though taller occupants will find their heads touching the roof in ES 350s equipped with the optional panoramic sunroof." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The ES' full-size roominess is a strong asset considering most similarly priced luxury sedans are either compact or mid-size. There's ample room throughout the ES; backseat room is spacious, and the seating position is comfortable, but I didn't find the front seats overly plush. … They're just kind of there, without any distinction in comfort or style." -- Cars.com (2017)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2018 ES include automatic climate control, Bluetooth, a USB port, an eight-speaker stereo, HD Radio, satellite radio, proximity key entry, push-button start, a moonroof, an 8-inch infotainment display screen, a rearview camera, smartphone-linked navigation, rain-sensing windshield wipers, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and Lexus Enform Safety Connect. Optional features include a panoramic glass roof, a power rear sunshade, navigation, voice command recognition, the Remote Touch controller, the Enform App Suite, a Mark Levinson sound system, an in-dash DVD player, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

Dashboard controls are easy to reach, and certain functions, like adjusting climate controls, are simple to use. The optional Remote Touch controller operates like a computer mouse, and it's difficult to use, especially while driving.

  • "All models offer a centrally mounted multimedia screen above the center air vents, operated by a console-mounted mouse-like Remote Touch system, which some find overly sensitive and frustrating to use." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "It's about time Lexus rethinks its Remote Touch interface for controlling multimedia, navigation and radio functions. The mouse-style controller was a novelty at first, but after a few years of using it in various Lexus vehicles, I've had enough of the awkward interaction and cursor-driven menu system. It's not easy to use while driving, and the big 8-inch screen isn't a touchscreen. Of course, you wouldn't want it to be, considering its position high atop the dashboard. Lexus added a back button for 2017, but it's just a bandage on an ill-performing system." -- Cars.com (2017)
  • "The climate controls are simple to use, but the audio system is a little more complicated due to the sheer number of available media types. This is true whether you get the standard Display Audio touchscreen/multipurpose knob controller, or upgrade to the Lexus Remote Touch system included with the Navigation package. The latter is essentially a mouse-like joystick device that controls a cursor on a large centrally located screen. Although interacting with this interface is very similar to using a computer mouse, the ultra-sensitive nature of the controller can make it clumsy and distracting to operate while driving." -- Edmunds (2017)

The Lexus ES has 15.2 cubic feet of cargo space. While that number is par for the class, utility is hampered by the fact that the rear seat doesn’t fold down at all. A power trunk is optional.

  • "The trunk offers 15.2 cubic feet of space, which is average for this class. The rear seats unfortunately do not fold down, however, and only a pass-through is offered." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The ES 350's trunk is large and usable. At 15.2 cubic feet, it's … larger than most compact luxury sedans'. … There isn't a folding backseat in the ES, however, and it's not a typical option among similarly sized sedans." -- Cars.com (2017)
