2014 Lexus ES Overview

Is the 2014 Lexus ES a Good Used Car?

The 2014 Lexus ES 350 is an excellent option if you want a used luxury midsize car that prioritizes driving comfort over sports car handling. The soft-riding ES has a roomy and quiet cabin, as well as great reliability and many advanced safety features.

Lexus equips all 2014 ES sedans with a 268-horsepower V6 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. The V6 operates smoothly, achieves an efficient 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, and provides quick acceleration. The transmission changes gears promptly. The Lexus softens the jolts from road bumps and potholes nicely. The ES steers lightly and feels maneuverable, just not particularly sporty.

The 2014 Lexus ES seats five and has standard leatherette upholstery and 10-way power-adjustable front seats. Heated and ventilated front seats are available, as is leather upholstery. The ES’ front row is comfortable and its seats offer good support. The car's rear seats have 40 inches of legroom, so even tall adults will find ample space. The cabin is well-insulated from road and wind noise. The ES’ trunk holds 15.2 cubic feet of cargo, which is above average for the class.

The Lexus ES’ dashboard has an elegant design and high-quality materials. An available 7-inch screen sits high on the dash, displaying climate and audio functions. It's operated with buttons on the steering wheel and console, and with a rotary dial near the gear shifter. Its functions are fairly limited, but it’s easy to use. The optional Remote Touch infotainment system isn’t so user-friendly. It replaces the rotary dial with a mouselike controller that awkwardly guides an on-screen cursor. Remote Touch features include navigation, an app suite (with Bing, Pandora, and more), and iPhone connectivity with Apple’s Siri Eyes Free.

How Reliable Is the 2014 Lexus ES?

The 2014 Lexus ES has excellent reliability ratings, earning a perfect five out of five from J.D. Power and Associates. Other class leaders for reliability include the 2014 Lexus GS and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

How Safe Is the ES?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Lexus ES sedan Good scores, the highest available, in all four areas it crash tested and an Advanced rating for the ES' crash-avoidance equipment. The 2014 ES has a large suite of available active safety features, including lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, parking sensors, a rearview camera, and Lexus’ Pre-Collision System (PCS). The system includes forward collision warning with brake assist and adaptive cruise control.

Should I Consider Another Used ES?

If you’re shopping for a used 2014 Lexus ES, you’ll want to give the 2013 ES a look too. Lexus redesigned the ES for 2013, and there were minimal updates to the 2014 and 2015 models. You may be able to find a similarly equipped 2013 ES for thousands less than a later model. The sixth-generation Lexus ES began with the 2013 model year and continues into 2017. The 2014 Lexus ES Hybrid is reviewed separately.

Which Used ES Model Is Right for Me?

The 2014 ES 350 sedan is the only trim. All models come with power-adjustable front seats, leatherette upholstery, a moonroof, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and Siri Eyes Free.

You might also want to consider a certified pre-owned ES. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Lexus extends its original new-car warranty to cover six years or unlimited mileage. Lexus puts its CPO vehicles through a 165-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Lexus warranty page carefully.

2014 Lexus ES and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Lexus ES or 2014 Lexus GS?

The 2014 Lexus GS and ES have a lot in common. Both cars offer excellent reliability, zippy V6 performance, a luxe cabin, the same advanced safety features, and, unfortunately, the same awkward available infotainment system. The core difference between these midsize cars is how they drive. The GS, available in rear- and all-wheel drive, offers sharper driving dynamics that balance sporty handling and a pliant ride. The front-wheel-drive ES shifts the focus almost entirely to ride comfort. Both are great used car options in this class, though the ES offers more rear-seat space and it's generally less expensive.

Which Is Better: 2014 Lexus ES or 2014 Lexus IS?

The 2014 Lexus IS, an upscale small car, emulates the balanced handling of the larger GS sport sedan. Unless you desire that type of performance, however, the ES sedan is the better buy. The ES rates higher in reliability, offers a roomier cabin and larger trunk, and delivers a smoother ride. Additionally, used ES models often carry a lower price tag than comparable used IS sedans. Both are available with a long list of advanced safety features, as well as the same finicky infotainment system.

Which Is Better: 2014 Lexus ES or 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

The 2014 Mercedes E-Class improves on the ES’ great recipe. The E-Class offers a supple ride, superb reliability, and an exquisite interior, but it also delivers sharper handling. It's available with rear- or all-wheel drive. A wide variety of engine options, from a four-cylinder diesel to a turbocharged V8, ensure the E-Class is quicker than the ES in a straight line and more fuel-efficient too. The Mercedes also offers better luxury features, such as massaging seats and rear-seat DVD screens, as well as more-advanced driver aids like self-parking. The Lexus ES is a good luxury car, and often found at a lower price, but the E-Class is better.
