2019 Land Rover Range Rover Interior Review

Interior: 6.3

The 2019 Range Rover doesn't have the interior panache of some competitors, but it doesn't skimp on luxury. Premium soft-touch materials cover virtually every nook and cranny of the interior, and both rows of seats are spacious and supportive. Many competitors have more cargo space and more user-friendly infotainment systems, however.

  • "All materials are supremely high-quality, from the super-thick carpeting to the soft perforated leather seats to the headliner. Almost every interior surface is upholstered, carpeted, or padded. Even the overhead grab handles have a soft stitched touch point. Of course, all storage areas are lined with flocking, and everything fits together well. Some of the switches and buttons could be fancier or more substantial, but that's a very minor gripe." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "Comfortable, opulent and artistically crafted, the interior of the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover is one of the finest you'll find at any price point. Detailed to perfection it marvelously blends old-world British charm and the build quality of fine custom furniture with modern technology, including two large touch screens and well-thought-out ergonomics." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • The Range Rover HSE looks well built inside and out, but the interior materials in particular look a bit plain and overly conservative. It's more an issue of style than quality, we suppose, but those two often go hand in hand." -- Edmunds (2017)

The Range Rover is a 2-row SUV that seats five people (four in models equipped with the Executive Class Seating package). Most luxury large SUVs have three rows and seat seven or more. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, and power-adjustable front seats come standard.

Ventilated front seats, heated and ventilated rear seats, front seats with added power-adjustability, massaging front and rear seats, a refrigerated center console, and a heated steering wheel are available. Long-wheelbase models offer 22-way adjustable rear seats and benefit from more than 7 inches of extra rear-seat legroom.

Front-seat occupants are treated to highly adjustable, sumptuous seats that make it easy to find a suitable driving or riding position, and drivers enjoy a commanding view of the road. The rear seats are similarly inviting. They're comfortable and spacious enough for three adults, and the long-wheelbase models in particular have expansive rear accommodations.

There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing child safety seats. The lower anchors are tough to get to, and the tether anchors can be hard to find. On the bright side, the seats have enough room for most types of car seats to fit easily.

  • "The new wider and soft front seats are decadent, providing intense heat and 25 different massage programs. Even the armrests are heated. Rear-seat space is abundant, especially in the long-wheelbase models, which have enough rear legroom for a couple of Shaquille O'Neals." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Three adults can fit easily in the excellent backseats. High and well-padded cushions provide fine support and comfort and the nearly flat floor creates ample foot room. Leg room is spacious as well, even on the standard-wheelbase model. The long-wheelbase version provides an additional seven inches of leg room, making for business-class accommodations." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "Climb up into the superb leather buckets and shut the door. Look down at the proletariat with proper smugness (I'm being sarcastic, sorta), and all of life's stresses just drain away. Yes, this is one extraordinary interior front and back; in fact, I suspect more than a few owners spend their time in the back buckets enjoying the leather and wood and plush carpets while others do the driving." -- Autoweek (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Range Rover include tri-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, and the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system with two 10-inch touch screens, navigation, a 13-speaker Meridian sound system, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth, USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Available features include a panoramic sunroof, quad-zone automatic climate control, Land Rover’s Activity Key, a rear-seat entertainment system, 19- and 29-speaker Meridian audio systems, a head-up display, driver drowsiness monitoring, traffic sign recognition, a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, a clear exit monitor, and park assist.

The infotainment system leaves room for improvement. The touch screen lags sometimes, and the interface seems unnecessarily complex. Some common functions lie buried beneath several layers of menus, making them tough to access. The available Activity Key is a cool feature, however. It’s a Fitbit-esque device that you wear on your wrist and can use to lock and unlock the vehicle – perfect if you like to go surfing or hiking without worrying about losing your keys.

  • "Land Rover's Touch Pro Duo system certainly looks amazing. But in our limited experience with it in other Land Rovers, we've found it can be a bit laggy and at times unresponsive. While the infotainment system has tons of features, it can also be overly complicated and frustrating to use." -- Edmunds
  • "A new standard feature on the 2018 Range Rover is called Activity Key. It's a wearable waterproof and robust device worn on the wrist, much like a Fitbit, and it can lock and unlock the SUV. This allows you to leave the keys behind when surfing, mountain biking or hiking. Clever." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "The central touch screen, which orchestrates many audio and climate functions, bred numerous frustrations. Shared among multiple Land Rover and Jaguar products, the system has nice clear fonts but a needlessly complicated menu structure that feels outdated. For example, it takes several steps to locate and adjust the seat heaters, even if you use the (poorly labeled) button shortcut to the applicable menu screen. Worse, the screen is often slow to respond or update itself, such as when you try to adjust the audio volume or change a radio station." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

The Range Rover has 31.8 cubic feet of cargo room with its rear seats up and 68.6 cubic feet (75.6 in long-wheelbase models) with the seats folded down. Behind the second row, there is 24.5 cubic feet of cargo space in models with the Executive Class Seating package and 28.3 cubic feet in plug-in hybrid variants. Many class rivals provide more space.

The air suspension comes with a cargo function that lowers the SUV when parked and makes loading items easier. A hands-free power liftgate comes standard. There's not a lot of small-item storage in the cabin.

  • The unique rear liftgate opens in two parts. The upper glass swings up while the lower section folds down like a small tailgate. Both sections are powered, controlled from either an interior switch, outside touch pad, or key fob button." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • The cargo hold is large, and the two-piece tailgate makes it easy to cram it full because the lower half acts as a fence when the hatch is open. The backseat doesn't come close to folding flat, though." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "Cabin storage could be better. It consists of upper and lower gloveboxes (both rather small), a small but deep console box, two covered cupholders in the console and two in a fold-down rear armrest, and map pockets." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
