2009 Land Rover Range Rover Review

The 2009 Land Rover Range Rover has an abundance of style, an opulent interior and off-road capability rivaled by few others, though its fuel economy is lower than other SUVs.

Pros & Cons

  • Capable and comfortable both on- and off-road
  • Luxurious, high-tech interior
  • Below-average fuel economy

2009 Land Rover Range Rover Overview

When it was new, reviewers said the 2009 Land Rover Range Rover had great style and luxurious interior appointments, as well as legendary off-roading ability. It is a good SUV as long as you don’t need to seat more than five people and don’t plan on hauling a lot of cargo. However, if you do need more utility, key rivals offer similar luxury and good off-road prowess.

The base 2009 Range Rover HSE is powered by a 305-horsepower V8 engine that testers said provides enough power for most. Still, many reviewers preferred the Supercharged trim, which makes 400 horsepower. Both HSE and Supercharged models have standard full-time four-wheel drive and a terrain response system that modulates the suspension to optimize ride comfort on varying road surfaces. Fuel economy for both models is 12/18 mpg city/highway, which is low, but not terrible for the class. Maximum towing capacity is 7,716 pounds, and maximum cargo capacity is 74.2 cubic feet, which are both less than those of class leaders.

Reviewers said that all of the Range Rover’s standard leather seats provided plenty of comfort and ample space. There are lots of standard features that include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, a sunroof, tri-zone climate control, navigation, Bluetooth and a 14-speaker stereo. If you want more luxury, a fully-loaded Range Rover could include features like higher-quality leather surfaces, upgraded wood dash inlays, a rear entertainment system and four-zone climate control.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re looking for a capable off-roader with more utility, consider the 2009 Lexus LX. It isn’t quite as opulent as the Range Rover, but it can tow more, carry up to eight and hold more cargo.

Another alternative to consider is the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL. It doesn’t have the off-road prowess of the Range Rover, but testers agreed that it has a comfortable ride and fairly good handling. It can carry a bit more cargo, though its towing ability is about the same. While the base GL isn’t as powerful, its diesel engine gets fuel economy estimates that are among the best in its class.
