2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Interior Review

Interior: 6.4

The 2020 Range Rover Sport has a beautiful cabin, with elegant styling and premium materials throughout. The seats are comfortable and provide plenty of head- and legroom, but the optional third-row seats make you feel like a sardine in a can. Cargo space is subpar for the luxury midsize SUV class as well. There are plenty of standard and available features, but the infotainment system is overly complex.

  • "Inside, the Range Rover Sport is awash in the finest leather and wood, every bit as luxurious at the finest Cadillac, Lexus or Infiniti SUV, but with that certain British charm only a Land Rover can replicate." -- Autotrader
  • "Historically, the Range Rover Sport has used excellent materials and meticulous craftsmanship. The new Touch Pro Duo system adds a thoroughly modern and appealing look, updating the cabin nicely." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "Lined with padded high-quality materials, the Range Rover Sport's interior is plush and welcoming. What might seem like forests of real wood and foundries of metallic trim line the cabin. A sliding wood door covers cup holders, and control knobs have grippy knurled edges. Even the carpet is super thick and soft. Overall, it's not quite as decadent as a full-boat Range Rover interior -- but it's still pretty nice." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

The Range Rover Sport seats five people in its standard configuration, and the available third row increases the seating capacity to seven.

Leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats come standard. Premium leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, massaging front seats, heated and ventilated rear seats, a refrigerated front center console, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The highly adjustable front seats make it easy to find a suitable driving position. They're comfortable and supportive as well, though the ample side bolstering may bother larger drivers. The second-row rear seats have enough head- and legroom for adults to ride comfortably, but the available third-row seats are incredibly cramped. No adults will want to ride back there, and even children will feel squeezed on longer drives.

For securing child safety seats, the Range Rover Sport has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats.

  • "All was not sunshine and roses on this test-drive, however. The third-row seat option is useless for carrying adults, and even kids will end up with cramps after an hour or two. We also had a problem with the rather large B-pillar next to the driver's head (it creates a huge blind spot) and the odd placement of the upward-facing power window switches, which allowed rain to soak the panel every time we lowered the window." -- Autotrader (2019)
  • "The highly adjustable front seats have ample padding and support, making the Range Rover [Sport] competitive with luxury sedans in terms of comfort." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • Chairlike front seats are comfortable and accommodating, with a wide range of power adjustments. Large bolsters offer plenty of lateral support, but bigger drivers might find them somewhat confining. There is ample rear-seat room, with firm, well-shaped cushions that provide good support. The optional third row can hold two kids, but it's cramped and a chore to access." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Range Rover Sport include dual-zone automatic climate control and the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system with two 10-inch touch screens, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, an eight-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, a USB port, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

The Range Rover Sport's two large touch screens are easy to see, but they're a bit of a reach from the driver's seat. Additionally, the infotainment system has room for improvement. Its complicated interface takes time to master, and the touch screens can be slow to respond to inputs.

Available features include a panoramic sunroof, tri- or quad-zone automatic climate control, a rear-seat entertainment system, and multiple Meridian audio systems. You can also equip the Range Rover Sport with Land Rover’s Activity Key, which is a waterproof wristband that lets you lock or unlock your vehicle.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist.

Available active safety features include a head-up display, blind spot monitoring, driver drowsiness monitoring, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, high-speed automatic emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert, parallel and perpendicular park assist, 360-degree parking sensors, and a surround-view parking camera system. Also available is a clear exit monitor, which helps you avoid opening the car door when traffic is approaching.

  • The Range Rover Sport packs a lot of technology options, including driver aids for both on and off the road and rear-seat entertainment screens. The Touch Pro Duo system looks sharp and futuristic, but it can be slow to respond and overly complicated to use." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • The interior has been slightly redesigned and now gets the dual-screen version of JLR’s InControl Touch Pro infotainment package. While this is more intuitive than the same system in the Velar – the Range Rover’s rotary temperature controls are never usurped for other functions – it feels slow to respond and short on intuitive smarts compared to rival systems." -- Car and Driver (2019)
  • "The … car's central touch screen, used to control many audio and climate functions … feels outdated and outclassed. Fonts are easy enough to read, but it's a long reach to the screen. Navigating the screen isn't always intuitive. For example, adjusting the seat heaters takes several steps, even if you take the poorly labeled shortcut button to the appropriate menu. In addition, the screen is often slow to respond or update, such as when adjusting the volume." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Most luxury midsize SUVs have more cargo room than this Land Rover. The Range Rover Sport provides 27.5 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 59.5 cubes with the rear seats folded down. Those totals drop to 24.8 and 56.8 cubic feet, respectively, in the plug-in-hybrid model.

A power liftgate comes standard, and a hands-free power liftgate is available.

  • "With 24.8 cubic feet behind the rear seat and a max of 56.8 cubic feet, cargo space lags the class leaders." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • With the second row up and in their rear-most position and the third-row seatback folded into the floor, we could fit three large upright suitcases and a duffel bag in the rear cargo area. The powered third row folds easily into the cargo floor using controls just inside the liftgate. The second-row seatbacks fold using a release lever on the side of the seat cushions, but they do not fold flat. The second-row center seatback folds down to create a pass-through for long items." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • Designed for children and teenagers, the optional third row of seats eats up most of the SUV's cargo capacity when in use but conveniently folds flat into the trunk floor when not needed." -- Left Lane News (2017)
