2016 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Land Rover Range Rover Sport was new.

Interior: 8.1

The 2016 Land Rover Range Rover Sport's cabin impresses reviewers with its stylish design and premium materials, and some say it is among the most luxurious interiors in the class. Test drivers agree the first- and second-row seats are comfortable, and the cabin is well-insulated from exterior noise. Most critics report the infotainment system is more cumbersome to use than some competitors' systems. The Range Rover Sport has a smaller cargo area than most luxury midsize SUVs.

  • "The Range Rover Sport offers a luxurious interior that features soft-touch materials, leather upholstery, a sport-inspired steering wheel with a small diameter and aluminum trim on the dashboard as well as on the door panels." -- Left Lane News
  • "Inside, the cabin is cosseting with rich leather, wood and metal materials, and all the creature comforts we've come to expect from this class of vehicle." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Where many modern luxury crossover SUVs seem to share a familiar silhouette, there is no mistaking the elegant form of Land Rover's Range Rover Sport for 2015. The story remains the same inside, where the British penchant for blending wood and leather has become an art form often copied but rarely successfully duplicated." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "[T]he rakish dashboard, top-notch materials and attractive wood and metal inlays add up to one of the nicest cabins in the segment." -- Edmunds (2015)

The 2016 Range Rover Sport has seats for five, and an available third-row seat increases capacity to seven. Leather upholstery, 14-way power-adjustable front seats and reclining second-row seats are standard. A higher-quality leather upholstery, 16-way power-adjustable front seats, a heated steering wheel and heated and ventilated front and second-row seats are optional.

According to critics, the front seats are exceptionally comfortable and offer a good view of the road ahead. They say the second row has ample legroom and enough space to comfortably seat a couple of adults, though the optional third-row seats are best suited to children. Reviewers agree that the Range Rover Sport’s noise-reduction materials keep the cabin hushed.

  • "An acoustic windshield, double-paned side glass, unique engine mounts, and a new firewall design muffle the clatter endemic to diesels. From the driver's seat, there's simply no audible clue that the engine is transforming compression ignition into propulsion." -- Car and Driver
  • Seat comfort is excellent in front, and the SVR's sport seats take lateral support to a new level. The rear outboard seats are fully adult-friendly, though the middle position, as usual, is only suitable for smaller occupants. As for the third row, Land Rover says it's specifically designed for children, and they're not kidding -- it's pretty tight back there." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "In the cabin, the new sport seats look splendid, and should serve as adequate companions both on and off-road." -- Autoblog (2015)
  • "[T]he cabin (now with 4.7 inches more rear seat room) was whisper quiet. The big buckets felt comfortable on and off road and the view out commanding." -- AutoWeek (2014)

  • The infotainment system is still not as strong as others on the market for both ease of use and responsiveness, but it's workable." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "The Range Rover's luxury interior has controls seemingly everywhere; fortunately, they're well thought-out and quickly become intuitive." -- Boston Globe
  • "Land Rover's navigation system takes far too long to power up, its voice recognition abilities are sketchy at best, and we couldn't get our iPod to connect to the system via the USB hub." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • The Range Rover Sport's infotainment offering isn't as robust as what you'll find in the Mercedes Benz GL or Audi Q7, for instance, but it has all the phone and audio connectivity we needed in our two days with the car." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

The 2016 Range Rover Sport has 27.7 cubic feet of cargo room behind the second-row seats and 62.2 cubic feet with them folded, which is less cargo space than most competitors offer. Test drivers note the optional third-row seats reduce cargo capacity, though they fold flat into the floor when not in use. Some reviewers say there are lots of convenient small-item storage spaces throughout the cabin, like an optional climate-controlled console. A hands-free power liftgate is standard.

  • Designed for children and teenagers, the optional third row of seats eats up most of the SUV's cargo capacity when in use but conveniently folds flat into the trunk floor when not needed." -- Left Lane News
  • "If we calculated cargo capacity per pound, the massive Range Rover Sport would certainly be one of the lowest-ranked SUVs." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "[T]he Range Rover provides loads of useful storage, including an optional cool box in the center console." -- Popular Mechanics (2014)
