2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport was new.

Interior: 8.1

Reviewers offer nearly unanimous praise of the redesigned 2014 Range Rover Sport's cabin, noting that it is tastefully designed with an abundance of surfaces covered in leather.

  • "The interior is awash in leather and piano-black accents-the Sport looks as ritzy inside as the Range Rover." -- Car and Driver
  • "Overall, the interior feels much higher-end than the previous Range Rover Sport's cabin. Land Rover has eliminated the questionable plastic pieces, and the abundant leather surfaces and wide variety of interior customization options make the 2014 Range Rover Sport feel more sophisticated and worthy of its lofty base price." -- Edmunds
  • "Premium materials meet tasteful design inside the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, creating a passenger cabin that offers the modern feel of an Audi interior, but is perhaps a little more elegant in its simplicity." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Materials and design are high quality, lovely to the touch, and thoughtfully designed." -- Popular Mechanics

The 2014 Range Rover Sport seats five, although an optional third row boosts seating capacity to seven. Leather seats are included on all models, though upper trims get higher-quality leather. Power-adjustable front seats are standard, and heated and cooled front seats are optional, as is a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats. Reviewers agree that the first- and second-row seats are extremely comfortable, and that the view of the road is commanding from the front seats. Most test drivers agree that the optional third row is only suitable for kids in a pinch.

  • "None of that surprised us. What did surprise were the gains in refinement: The cabin (now with 4.7 inches more rear seat room) was whisper quiet. The big buckets felt comfortable on and off road and the view out commanding." -- AutoWeek
  • "There is also a new power-split-folding third row of seats, which makes for what Land Rover charitably calls a ‘5+2’ passenger configuration; don't venture back there unless you're a working gymnast. At least the rear seat puts the Sport among the few SUVs with a rear weight bias." -- Car and Driver
  • "The highly adjustable front seats are comfortable and provide plenty of support. You sit lower than you do in the standard Range Rover and the center console is higher, too, adding to the "cockpit" feel, but visibility is still excellent for an SUV." -- Edmunds
  • "Leather is also a key feature to that beautiful interior. The 14-way-adjustable front seats are heated and cooled and just one massage session away from perfect. The riding position is very upright, making it extremely comfortable for long hauls. The second row can serve as two lounge chairs if you fold down the center portion, which becomes an armrest and cupholder. Thanks to the longer wheelbase, the Range Rover Sport provides an optional third row that can accommodate two kids for around-town trips." -- Motor Trend

Interior Features

Standard features on the 2014 Range Rover Sport include dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, a backup camera, an eight-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, navigation and two USB ports. Major options include quad-zone climate control, a surround camera system that provides the driver with views all around the vehicle, a 19-speaker Meridian surround-sound audio system, blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.

While one reviewer says that various controls in the Range Rover Sport are intuitive, several others aren't so impressed, noting that the infotainment system can be confusing to operate and slow to respond to inputs. One critic also expresses frustration with the complicated gear lever, which is not as simple as simply sliding the lever back and forth between P, R, N or D.

  • "The driver is faced with Jaguar Land Rover's all-electronic dashboard, which feels dumpy compared to the rest of the interior, and we're still not fans of the touchscreen that controls the infotainment." -- Popular Mechanics
  • "Controls have been complex in past generations of the Range Rover, but in the 2014 Range Rover Sport they were quite intuitive and easy to operate." -- MSN
  • "Simply put, Land Rover - and Jaguar, for that matter - is still too far behind the competition in terms of infotainment technology. It's not that the functionality isn't there, it's just that the whole system isn't very driver-intuitive, and even with the improved response times of the touchscreen, it still lags in a MyFord Touch-like manner." -- Autoblog
  • "The Sport's shifter, like some other luxury automakers-cough, BMW, cough, cough-is deliberately cumbersome, requiring multiple moves to change gears. Want ‘Neutral’? Slide the lever down to ‘N.’ But ‘Drive’ and ‘Reverse’ require pushing a button on the backside of the lever. And ‘Park’ is another separate button on the top of the shifter. It's all a little frustrating." -- Road and Track

The 2014 Range Rover Sport offers 27.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats and 62.2 cubic feet with the second row folded. This is less cargo space than what other luxury midsize SUVs offer, though one reviewer says that the Range Rover Sport has useful storage areas throughout the cabin.

  • "And when you don't need the space for passengers, folding the rear seats flat is an easy one-button affair. Cargo capacity remains low for this class, with 27.7 cubic feet of space behind the second row and a maximum volume of 62.2 with the second-row seats folded." -- Edmunds
  • "Rear-seat accommodation is generous and the Range Rover provides loads of useful storage, including an optional cool box in the center console." -- Popular Mechanics
