2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Overview

Is the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport a Good Used SUV?

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a good choice for the used car buyer who craves luxury and off-road capability. Its Terrain Response four-wheel-drive system can tackle almost any challenge, and its interior competes with most in the luxury midsize SUV segment. However, its below-average reliability score and high ownership cost keep it from being a very good choice.

Performance is outstanding, thanks in part to the standard supercharged 340-horsepower V6 engine. A supercharged V8 with 510 horsepower is available. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard with either engine. The Range Rover Sport can tow up to 7,716 pounds. Towing features include a trailer stability assist system to reduce sway and a surround-camera system with tow assist for easier hitching and reversing. The Range Rover Sport has a comfortable ride and nimble handling. Its brakes have plenty of stopping power, and its steering has good weight and accuracy.

The Land Rover Terrain Response system offers drive modes for different types of terrain, including snow, mud and ruts, sand, and rock. The Range Rover Sport also comes standard with hill descent control, which makes it easier to go down steep grades off-road. Upper trims have Terrain Response 2, which automatically detects the best mode for the conditions and switches accordingly, without driver input.

The Range Rover's fuel economy estimates are a bit low for the class. A V6-powered Range Rover Sport earns an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, while the V8 model achieves 14 mpg in the city and 19 on the highway.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport seats five, although an optional third row boosts seating capacity to seven. The third row is best left for smaller children, especially on a long drive. Leather seats are included in all models. Power-adjustable front seats are standard. Heated and cooled front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats are available. You’ll find complete LATCH child-seat systems on the second-row outboard seats. The middle seat has a tether anchor.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport offers 27.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats and 62.2 cubic feet with the second row folded. This is less cargo space than what other luxury midsize SUVs offer.

Standard features in the 2014 Range Rover Sport include dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, an eight-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, navigation, an infotainment system, and two USB ports. Options for this model year included quad-zone climate control, a 360-degree camera system, and a 19-speaker Meridian surround sound audio system. The infotainment system can be confusing and slow to respond.

How Reliable Is the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport?

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport has a below-average reliability score of 2.5 out of five from J.D. Power and Associates. Almost half of 2014 luxury midsize SUVs have the same reliability score – or worse.

How Safe Is the Range Rover Sport?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety did not crash test the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. Many luxury vehicles aren't crash tested because of the expenses involved. Standard safety equipment includes rearview and forward-facing cameras, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beam assist.

Should I Consider Another Used Range Rover Sport?

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is the first model of the second generation, which includes the 2017 model year. The 2015 model year launched a 550-horsepower supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine, while an available turbodiesel V6 was introduced for 2016. Absent the new engines, the 2014, 2015, and 2016 models are all similar. If you don’t need lots of power or the turbodiesel’s improved fuel economy, stick with the 2014 Range Rover Sport for its lower price.

Which Used Land Rover Range Rover Sport Is Right for Me?

The 2014 Range Rover Sport comes in four trims: SE, HSE, Supercharged, and Autobiography. The standard engine is a 340-horsepower supercharged V6. A 510-horsepower supercharged V8 is standard in the Supercharged and Autobiography trims. An eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard. Some models have a third row, which boosts passenger capacity.

The base SE includes a rearview camera, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, navigation, and Bluetooth. The HSE offers a panoramic moonroof and a heated driver’s seat. The Supercharged trim adds off-road-focused features, like an active suspension system and a locking rear differential. The Autobiography trim adds blind spot monitor, satellite radio, heated rear seats, and a ventilated driver’s seat.

The Range Rover HSE will be the best choice for most buyers since it has the best fuel economy and an abundance of features. If you plan on going off road a lot, you'll want the Supercharged trim for its standard active suspension and other off-road enhancements.

You may also want to consider a certified pre-owned Range Rover Sport. Land Rover extends its original new-car warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles for certified pre-owned vehicles. Every CPO Land Rover must pass a 165-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Land Rover warranty page carefully.

2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport or 2014 BMW X5?

The 2014 Range Rover Sport’s performance makes it a better choice than the 2014 BMW X5. Both have agile handling, but the Range Rover Sport has a more powerful base engine. The X5 is solid in foul weather when equipped with all-wheel drive, but the Range Rover Sport’s standard four-wheel drive can tackle more off-road challenges. The models’ interiors are largely comparable, but the BMW has less front and rear legroom than the Land Rover, and a lot less cargo space when the second row is up.

Which Is Better: 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport or 2014 Porsche Cayenne?

The 2014 Porsche Cayenne tops the 2014 Range Rover Sport for one important reason: reliability. The Cayenne has a reliability rating of 4.5 out of five from J.D. Power and Associates, which is better than most. In contrast, the Range Rover Sport has a score of 2.5. Poor reliability gets expensive among luxury midsize SUVs once you’re out of warranty. Both the Porsche and Land Rover have upscale interiors. The Range Rover Sport has the more powerful base engine, a longer list of standard features (like navigation and power-adjustable seats), and a larger cargo area.

Which Is Better: 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport or 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque?

The Range Rover Sport and its stablemate, the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, are pretty similar. Both have nimble handling, brisk acceleration, and good off-road capabilities. Their passenger cabins also have similar luxury materials. However, the Range Rover Sport is a better choice since it has more room for cargo and rear passengers. The Range Rover Sport also has a 7,716-pound towing capacity, which is about 4,200 pounds more than the Evoque can handle.
