2010 Land Rover LR4 Overview

Reviewers said the 2010 Land Rover is a terrific off-roader that can go places that would stop even some of its most able competitors. The LR4, which was new for 2010, adds substantial amounts of interior luxury when compared with the outgoing 2009 Land Rover LR3, with more high-tech features, better workmanship and a better on-road driving experience. Test drivers noted that the LR4 is fairly comfortable and nimble on paved roads, and off the beaten path, the LR4’s terrain response system is impressive. Overall, it’s hard to find another SUV in this price range with the LR4’s on-road maneuverability and off-road brawn.

However, that doesn’t mean it’s a great choice for most buyers. The LR4’s standard 5.0-liter V8 engine may be powerful, but it has EPA fuel economy ratings of just 12/17 mpg city/highway. Some test drivers complained about the quality of its interior materials and its small third-row seats. The Land Rover LR4 may be a supremely capable off-road SUV, but suburbanites and city dwellers may want to think twice before settling on this backwoods-oriented SUV.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re considering the LR4 because of its luxury prestige and third row of seats, take a look at the highly-ranked 2010 Acura MDX. Its safety scores are excellent and its third row of seats is a bit roomier than the LR4’s. Additionally, the MDX’s good handling and gas mileage add to its appeal.

The 2010 Lexus GX offers similarly great off-road performance to the Land Rover LR4, but its interior quality and features are much more upscale. The GX’s fuel economy isn’t fantastic, but it’s better than the LR4’s. Reviewers said the GX’s cabin is roomy, attractive and luxurious, and its navigation and infotainment controls are easy to use. The Lexus GX might not offer the same prestige as the Land Rover badge brings, but it matches or bests the LR4 in most respects.
