2009 Land Rover LR3 Review

The 2009 Land Rover LR3 is a luxury SUV with very good performance, but poor fuel economy and a lackluster interior limit its appeal.

Pros & Cons

  • Great off-road capability
  • Terrible fuel economy
  • Drab interior

2009 Land Rover LR3 Overview

The 2009 Land Rover LR3 is a great SUV if you need a serious off-roader, but the LR3’s 12/17 mpg city/highway fuel economy means you’ll be forking over lots of cash at the pump. Many test drivers noted that like most other Land Rovers at the time, the LR3’s center console is button-heavy and tough to use.

The LR3 came with lots of standard performance-enhancing features, as well as parking sensors, power front seats, dual-zone climate control, leather and a sunroof. Features like front parking sensors, front and rear heated seats, Bluetooth, satellite radio and navigation were available as options or in packages when the LR3 was new.

The LR3’s off-road prowess also limits its on-road comfort. While some reviewers noted that it felt cumbersome to drive, with noticeable body lean and a bumpy ride over broken pavement, others called it quite nimble for its size. The LR3’s V8 engine also received mixed reviews. Some reviewers said it handled the LR3’s heft well, while others said it was underpowered. Overall, the Land Rover LR3 is a great off-road SUV, but if you’re shopping for a vehicle that will see mostly on-road family duty, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere.

Other Cars to Consider

Test drivers said the 2009 Volvo XC90 won’t blow you away in any one area, but it’s a solid three-row crossover in most respects. It has excellent safety scores, and although its base V6 engine feels underpowered, it does get fairly good fuel economy.

The 2009 Acura MDX offers great handling, good fuel economy and an upscale, well-equipped cabin. Test drivers recommended the MDX for drivers who need three rows of seats in their SUV and don’t want to sacrifice a fun driving experience.
