2019 Land Rover Discovery Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2019 Land Rover Discovery or 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport?

The 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is Land Rover’s more upscale luxury midsize SUV, but in most ways the Discovery is better. The Discovery has loads more cargo space, and its available third row is roomier than that of the Range Rover Sport. The Discovery also has a higher tow rating, and it earns better reviews for its infotainment operation. As products of the same brand, these SUVs have many similarities. They both come with a high-end interior, phenomenal off-road abilities, and the same standard supercharged V6 and available diesel engines. The Range Rover Sport distinguishes itself with additional powertrain choices, including a plug-in hybrid and high-powered supercharged V8s. However, you'll likely spend tens of thousands of dollars more for the Range Rover, and its ownership costs fare poorly in the class.

Which Is Better: 2019 Land Rover Discovery or 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Discovery Sport?

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport is a luxury compact SUV. Its only real advantage over the larger Discovery is that it has a much lower price range. The Discovery Sport has a terrible predicted reliability rating and a lower-quality interior than many of its Land Rover siblings. Also, it doesn't match up to the Discovery for ride quality and handling, both on and off road. The Discovery is available with things you won’t find in the Sport, such as a two-speed transfer case and an upgraded terrain response system. Both of these Land Rovers are available as three-row, seven-seat SUVs, but the Discovery Sport's rearmost seats are much tinier, and you'll get a lot more cargo space with the regular Discovery. Unless you're on a tighter budget, go for the Discovery over the Discovery Sport.

Which Is Better: 2019 Land Rover Discovery or 2019 Jaguar F-Pace?

The 2019 Jaguar F-Pace offers deft on-road handling, and it has a lineup of five intriguing engine choices, including two turbo-fours, a very fuel-efficient diesel, and a supercharged V6 and V8. Though it doesn't come close to the Discovery's off-road prowess, the F-Pace is a better choice for on-pavement driving fun. The Land Rover has a larger cargo hold, a nicer cabin, and it's available with a third row, which is not available in the smaller F-Pace. Choosing between these two depends on if you like the Jaguar's performance or the Discovery's luxury and space.

How Does the 2019 Land Rover Discovery Drive?

The Land Rover Discovery's on-road manners are a nice blend of comfort and poise. This SUV rides smoothly over rough pavement, and the journey is even better in models with the available adaptive air suspension. The Discovery takes turns with composure and exhibits little body roll despite its size.

The Discovery's standard supercharged V6 is one of the most powerful base engines in the class. It aids in swift acceleration and gives you plenty of muscle for nearly any driving situation. Your other option is an impressive diesel that idles quietly and has ample torque on tap.

  • Base engine: 3.0-liter supercharged V6 with 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque
  • Available engine: 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 with 254 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque
  • Drivetrain: four-wheel drive
  • Transmission: eight-speed automatic
Does the 2019 Land Rover Discovery Get Good Gas Mileage?

With its standard supercharged engine, the 2019 Discovery gets an EPA-rated 16 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. Those estimates are below average for a luxury midsize SUV. On the flip side, diesel models return 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, figures which are better for the class. Driving the diesel Discovery would save you around $650 in annual fuel costs compared to the supercharged version.

2019 Land Rover Discovery Off-Roading

The Discovery is an off-road beast and features standard four-wheel drive, hill descent control, and selectable terrain modes: General Driving, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud & Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl. Available features include a two-speed transfer case and an air suspension that adjusts to give you more than 11 inches of ground clearance.

The available Terrain Response 2 system automatically selects correct parameters for the conditions you're in. Optional All Terrain Progress Control acts as a low-speed cruise control system to let you focus on steering inputs when off-roading. The Discovery can ford water up to 34.4 inches, and an automatic wade depth sensing system is available.

2019 Land Rover Discovery Towing Capacity

The Discovery can tow up to 8,201 pounds when properly equipped. That's excellent for the class.
