2018 Land Rover Discovery Interior Review

Interior: 8.4

As you might expect from the company that makes the ultra-chic Range Rover, the 2018 Land Rover Discovery has a luxurious cabin that's filled with first-rate materials. The interior design even resembles that of the flagship Range Rover. The cabin is very quiet, too, with little road noise. The seats in all three rows are comfortable and roomy, and the tech features are easy to use. The Discovery has above-average cargo capacity for the class.

  • "That third row is the best you'll find in a Land Rover product, comfortable enough for large children or moderately sized adults." -- Autoblog (2017)
  • "The interior is a calm oasis, bereft of wind noise, with comfortable seating for as many as seven passengers. While not appreciably larger than the LR4's, the interior is a far more pleasant place to be thanks to high-quality materials and a dash design that mimics that of the Range Rover." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "There are also storage cubbies all over the interior, 21(!) in total, including one big enough for four iPads." -- Autoweek (2017)

As standard, the 2018 Discovery SE and HSE have seats for five in two rows, while the HSE Luxury has seats for seven in three rows. The third row is available in SE and HSE models with an option package. Standard comfort features include leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats.

Options include upgraded leather upholstery, heated and ventilated first- and second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, and a power-adjustable steering wheel.

All seats in the Discovery are comfortable. The front seats are very adjustable, allowing you to get into the perfect position and have a clear view of the road ahead. The second row is roomy, and even the third-row seats are big enough for adults. The leather upholstery is very soft.

The Discovery has full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors on the outboard rear seats. The optional third row adds two more full sets of tethers and anchors.

  • "Unlike other 3-row midsize SUVs, even adults can use the third row without feeling punished. The best seat remains the driver's. The frontal view out is great, and we continue to praise the infinitely adjustable armrests on the sides of the front seats." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "We found the back seats perfectly suitable and actual humans can fit in the third row." -- Autoweek (2017)
  • "The leather is buttery, the steering wheel is meaty and the steering feel direct, the ride is crisp, and sightlines characteristically are excellent." -- Autoblog (2017)

Interior Features

The Discovery comes standard with a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a 10-inch touch screen, navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot, push-button start, rain-sensing wipers, a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors.

Optional features include four-zone automatic climate control, a 14-speaker Meridian surround-sound system, satellite radio, HD Radio, a rear-seat entertainment system, a head-up display, drowsiness monitoring, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a traffic sign recognition system, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, and front parking sensors.

The long list of standard features should keep you comfortable and entertained. Notable highlights include a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot and a large 10-inch touch-screen infotainment system. Land Rover's Activity Key is a unique option. This waterproof wristband lets you lock and unlock the SUV without carrying around a key fob – a particularly useful feature when taking part in outdoor pursuits. With as many tech features as there are, the infotainment system notably lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Still, the system is user-friendly, with straightforward menus and quick response times. Most features are controlled through the touch screen, so there are few physical buttons on the center stack.

  • "Technology lovers will enjoy the Discovery's numerous high-tech gadgets, including a waterproof Activity Key wristband that allows access via the power tailgate and a set of power folding seats activated via the owner's smartphone." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Inside the nicely built cabin the new Discovery has the company's much-improved infotainment touchscreen, with a third less buttons to fiddle with, and its way better graphics. Features include 3G Wi-Fi, available Meridian 17-speaker sound system, as many as six 12-volt outlets and no less than nine USB sockets." -- Autoweek (2017)
  • "The futuristic steering wheel and the center console exude a chunky sophistication. The InControl Touch Pro 10.0-inch touchscreen is well integrated, responsive, and intuitive, although its presence means the loss of some convenient physical buttons." -- Autoblog (2017)

There's 45 cubic feet of cargo room behind the Discovery's second-row seats and 82.7 cubic feet with the seats folded. Both figures are above average for the class. All models have a hands-free power liftgate. The trunk has a wide opening to make loading large items an easy process. Intelligent Seat Fold is an optional feature that lets you remotely put the rear seats up or down using your smartphone.

  • "The huge rear hatch affords easy access to a class-competitive cargo hold. The higher trim levels come with a power-folding tailgate that provides a bench to sit on when the hatch is open. It sounds frivolous and does complicate cargo loading, but it's also a comfy spot from which to survey your spread." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "Cargo capacity is 82.7 cubic feet with 45 cubic feet available behind the second row. One cool trick is called Intelligent Seat Fold technology, letting you use a smartphone app to remotely fold or extend the second- and third-row power seats." -- Autoweek (2017)
  • "There are power-folding seat controls back there (the seats can also be operated from the InConnect Touch smartphone app, in case you need to fold down the seats from another county) and a power-operated fold-down tailgate thing since the previous model's split rear hatch has been replaced by a one-piece unit. True to its billing, that tailgate is a great place to sip tea while sheltered from the rain by the overhanging hatch. Behind the tailgate is either a cavernous space or a two-place third-row seat, depending on vehicle configuration and options. With all seats folded flat, there's 82.7 cubic feet, and behind the second row there's 45." -- Autoblog (2017)
