2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport Review

The 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport is an excellent off-road SUV that provides more cargo space than most of its rivals. It ranks near the bottom of its class, however, thanks to a temperamental turbocharged engine, a sluggish transmission, and below-average predicted reliability.

Pros & Cons

  • Skilled off-roader
  • Ample cargo space

  • Engine suffers from turbo lag
  • Slow-shifting transmission
  • Low predicted reliability rating

2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport Overview

Is the Land Rover Discovery Sport a Good Used SUV?

The Discovery Sport offers a hushed ride, good forward visibility, and substantial space for passengers and their luggage. It’s also one of the best off-road vehicles in the class. However, its lone available powertrain suffers from turbo lag, its transmission is slow to respond, and it has one of the worst predicted reliability ratings in the class. The Discovery Sport is a great luxury compact SUV for off-roading, but if you’re looking for a daily driver, there are better options.

Used 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport Performance and Interior

The Discovery Sport comes with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 240 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive come standard. The engine produces noticeable turbo lag, and its hesitant transmission leaves much to be desired. The ride is firm yet comfortable, and steering is precise and responsive. The standard Terrain Response system creates superb off-road performance with four different driving modes: Mud and Ruts, Snow, Sand, and Rock. The Discovery Sport gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. This is about average for the class, but rivals like the Audi Q5 offer better fuel efficiency.

The Discovery Sport can seat up to seven people with its optional third row – an outlier in a class full of five-seaters. That said, this extra row is best suited for teenagers or smaller adults. There’s plenty of room in the first two rows, and visibility is good in the front. The quiet cabin is full of upscale materials, and there’s lots of storage space. It has two sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in its sliding second row of seats, and they’re simple to use.

The Discovery Sport has a considerable amount of standard features, including three USB ports, a rearview camera, push-button start, partial leather upholstery, and an infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen and Bluetooth. The touch-screen infotainment system has a crisp display and easy-to-use functionality. Some models come with full leather seats, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, proximity entry, navigation, and satellite radio.

How Safe Is the Discovery Sport?

Like many costly luxury vehicles, the Discovery Sport was not tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are standard in the Discovery Sport. Available active safety features include front parking sensors, automatic emergency braking, parallel park assist, and lane departure warning.

Should I Consider Another Used Discovery Sport?

2015 marks the first model year of the Land Rover Discovery Sport's first generation, which includes the 2017 model. For 2016, Land Rover added the InControl Remote (which allows you to use your smartphone to remotely start and preheat the vehicle, among other things) to the standard features list. Aside from that, these two model years are nearly identical, so unless InControl is a must-have feature for you, save some money and purchase a 2015 model instead.

Which Used Land Rover Discovery Sport Is Right for Me?

The Land Rover Discovery Sport comes in three trim levels: SE, HSE, and HSE Lux. The base SE trim comes with the Terrain Response system, two USB ports in the second row, a rearview camera, push-button start, an 8-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, and partial leather upholstery. An optional third row is available. The HSE trim adds leather seats, a moonroof, a power liftgate, front parking sensors, memory front seats, and Xenon headlights. The HSE Lux trim adds upgraded leather upholstery, navigation, satellite radio, an 11-speaker sound system, HD Radio, and mood lighting.

The top two trim levels are for those who want to go the extra mile for luxury. The base trim, however, has enough features to satisfy the average buyer.

Given the Discovery Sport's below-average predicted reliability score, you might prefer a certified pre-owned model. For its CPO vehicles, Land Rover extends the original new-car warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles. Every CPO Land Rover must pass a 165-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Land Rover warranty page carefully.

2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport or 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque?

The 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is a luxury subcompact SUV. It has higher fuel economy estimates (21/29 mpg city/highway) and more-powerful engines than the Discovery Sport, but cargo and rear-passenger space is miniscule. Opt for the Discovery Sport: You can get a third row (not available in the Evoque) and likely pay around the same price.

Which Is Better: 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport or 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport?

The 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport drives well around town as well as off the road. That alone, however, isn’t enough to recommend it over the Discovery Sport. It suffers from the same low reliability scores, and fuel economy is worse (17/22 city/highway). It also has one of the highest ownership costs in the luxury midsize SUV class.

Which Is Better: 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport or 2015 BMW X3?

The 2015 BMW X3 bests the Discovery Sport in almost every category. It has above-average predicted reliability, punchy engines, and superb safety scores. Unlike the Discovery Sport, the X3 isn’t meant for off-roading. If that isn’t a top priority, go for a used X3. Buying the X3 over the Discovery Sport might even save you some cash.
