2020 Land Rover Defender Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 6.7

The 2020 Land Rover Defender has a simple cabin with a mix of upscale and basic materials. This luxury midsize SUV offers a solid number of standard and available features, and the seats are roomy and comfortable. Cargo volume is about average for the class.

  • "Some plastic trim bits here and there disappoint, but overall the 110’s cabin is about as no-nonsense as it ought to be given the Defender’s overall mission." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Adventurists seeking a rugged, raw experience within the new Defender 110 will find a mixed bag of cabin hardware. While the 110 certainly lacks the level of leather-lined poshness you'd find in a six-figure Range Rover, in its higher-spec form the Defender is civilized yet simple, offering leather surfaces and clean expanses of bare but inoffensive trim." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Inside, the Defender has been dragged into the 21st century, but still looks and feels true to its roots. The cabin isn't about luxury -- it's rugged, with a tough, rubber-like coating on the dashboard, heavy-duty floor mats and lots of exposed screws and rivets." -- CNET

Seating

The Land Rover Defender seats between five and seven people. A front-row middle seat and a two-seat third row are optional, though you can't get both options in any model. The front seats are comfortable and offer great outward visibility. The second-row seats are similarly comfortable, and they're roomy enough for taller passengers.

Standard features include cloth upholstery, eight-way adjustable front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Options include leather upholstery, Windsor leather upholstery, 12-way adjustable front seats, 12-or 14-way power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats. For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats.

  • "The front captain's chairs offer up plenty of room, while the second-row bench is adult-friendly. I was able to squeeze my 6'0" frame behind the driver's seat set in my position, with a good amount of room for feet, head and knees, along with decent leg room. The second-row bench sits lower to the floor, but outward visibility is still good." -- Motor Trend
  • "You sit high in the driver's seat, and you can see the opposite front wing, which adds to the intuitive feeling of where the vehicle is on the road." -- Autoblog
  • "And the seats are firm enough for all-day comfort but forgiving enough when bashing about." -- Car and Driver

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2020 Defender include dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, proximity keyless entry, and a 7-inch driver information display. A standard 10-inch touch-screen infotainment system includes Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, HD Radio, InControl Remote services, navigation, wireless device charging, and a six-speaker stereo.

The infotainment screen is within easy view of the driver, and other dashboard controls are laid out intuitively. The system responds quickly to inputs and is easy to operate.

Optional features include a Wi-Fi hot spot, tri-zone automatic climate control, an air quality sensor and cabin air purification system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10- or 14-speaker Meridian stereo, a rearview mirror camera, a panoramic roof, a front center console refrigerator, satellite radio, and a household-style power outlet.

Standard driver assistance features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, a surround-view parking camera system, an off-road front-view camera, driver attention monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic speed limit recognition, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Automatic high-beam headlights, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display are optional.

  • "The touchscreen infotainment system … is tucked neatly into a dashboard storage tray. It’s both accessible and cool-looking without disrupting the flow of the driver’s outward view. … The rest of the vehicle’s controls are organized in a purposeful way that makes them generally easy to access. They all look rugged." -- Jalopnik
  • "Compared to the rest of the Land Rover lineup's Touch Pro Duo interface, the Defender's system relies on a single touchscreen instead of two, offers quicker response times, and can handle over-the-air software updates for future releases." -- Car and Driver
  • "It frames a large 10-inch touchscreen with Land Rover's latest PIVI Pro infotainment suite. Below the touchscreen is the shifter, buttons for air suspension height-adjustment, traction control, low-range, and dual-purpose knobs that function as temperature controls. These buttons, when pressed, also help operate the Terrain Response 2 controls." -- Motor Trend

Cargo

The Land Rover Defender 110 has 34 cubic feet of space behind its rear seats and 78.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Those values are about average for a luxury midsize SUV.

Defender models with the optional third row have 10.7 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 34.6 cubic feet behind the second row, and 69 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. The short-wheelbase Defender 90 has 15.6 cubic feet of space behind its rear seats and a maximum cargo capacity of 58.3 cubic feet.

  • "Cargo space behind the rear seat is somewhat limited, but on par with rival off-roaders such as the Jeep Wrangler; the rear seats can be folded to open up a much larger cargo bay, but those seeking to haul people and gear may want to look at the larger Land Rover Discovery or invest in a roof-top cargo carrier." -- Car and Driver
  • "The Defender 110's cargo area is rather large." -- Motor Trend
