2012 Kia Sportage Review

When equipped with a turbocharged engine and automatic transmission, reviewers said the 2012 Kia Sportage is a good performer, but they thought its ride is too firm.

Pros & Cons

  • Energetic available turbocharged engine
  • Well-equipped, stylish cabin
  • Good safety score
  • Overly firm ride

2012 Kia Sportage Overview

The 2012 Kia Sportage comes with a four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission, while a more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission were optional when it was new. The base engine produces adequate power for the average commuter, reviewers said. If you need more power, they recommended the turbocharged engine, which offers plenty of power for passing and merging. Test drivers were also impressed with the Sportage's smooth, responsive automatic transmission. With up to an estimated 21/30 mpg city/highway, the Kia Sportage gets good fuel economy for the class. Critics said the Sportage offers well-controlled handling and accurate steering. However, they noted that the Sportage's ride quality feels overly firm and harsh.

Reviewers generally liked the 2012 Kia Sportage's interior styling, which features attractive hard plastic surfaces throughout the cabin. Some reviewers found the Sportage's seats to be uncomfortably firm, but most noted that the front seats offer good head- and legroom. With the back seats folded, the Kia Sportage has 54.6 cubic feet of cargo space. Standard features on the Sportage include satellite radio, a USB port, an auxiliary input and Bluetooth, making it well-equipped for the class. Optional features when it was new include navigation, Kia’s voice-activated UVO infotainment system, a rearview camera and push-button start. Overall, automotive writers thought the navigation system is easy to use.

The 2012 Kia Sportage earns a better safety score than many competing compact SUVs.

Other SUVs to Consider

The 2012 Honda CR-V has one of the largest cargo capacities in the class, as well as excellent safety scores. Both the front and back seats are comfortable and have plenty of head- and legroom, according to reviewers.

Test drivers were impressed with the 2012 Hyundai Tucson's responsive steering and easy maneuverability in small spaces. Additionally, reviewers said the Hyundai Tucson has a handsome, well-equipped cabin with good head- and legroom in the rear seats.
