2009 Kia Sportage Overview

Though most reviewers said the 2009 Kia Sportage is an adequate compact SUV, they also said that others in the class are simply better. The 2009 Kia Sportage offers decent car-like handling and ride quality, but reviewers disliked its underpowered engines. In fact, test drivers felt that the four-cylinder engine in the Honda CR-V outclassed the Sportage’s V6. Also, the Sportage’s base four-cylinder engine gets fuel economy of 22 mpg combined city/highway, which is typical for the class. Its available V6 gets 20 mpg combined.

The Sportage has a long list of standard interior features and plenty of leg- and headroom, but several reviewers were disappointed in the quality of the materials used in the interior. Most test drivers said the seats are comfortable, but complained that the legroom in the back seat is cramped. Many reviewers thought that controls are easy to access, read and use and the rear seats easily fold flat to create additional cargo room. Reviewers said that the Sportage’s list of standard features was quite impressive and includes a six-speaker audio system with a USB port, air conditioning and satellite radio. Available features include a navigation system, leather-wrapped steering wheel and remote engine start.

The 2009 Kia Sportage will likely have a lower price tag than most in the class, but if you can afford to pay more, there are a number of better 2009 compact SUVs worth considering.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Toyota RAV4 is a smart option because of its good performance and strong safety scores. The RAV4 has better fuel economy than the Sportage while producing 39 more horsepower from its base engine. In addition, the RAV4 has an available third row.

If you’re searching for a 2009 compact SUV with a spacious interior, the highly-ranked 2009 Chevrolet Equinox should be on your list. The Equinox has powerful engine options, though fuel economy is worse than a comparably-equipped Sportage or RAV4.
