2019 Kia Soul Interior Review

Interior: 8.6

The 2019 Kia Soul has one of the nicest and most refined cabins in the class. There are upscale materials throughout, and its passenger and cargo areas are spacious. The highest Exclaim (!) trim provides an even more sophisticated ride with even higher-quality materials.

  • "Materials and construction are slightly better than expected for a car at this price. Even better materials and nicer seat upholstery can be found in the top Exclaim trim and with the Plus Primo package." -- Edmunds
  • "Headroom is ample thanks to the Soul’s tall roof, and cargo space is adequate with the rear seat up but plentiful when folded down. Clever features like pulsating speaker lights further separate the Soul from its less imaginative rivals." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Many of the Soul's competitors offer similar flashy exterior colors and cool wheels, but they usually fall flat once you gain access to the interior. This is not so in the Soul." -- Autotrader

There are five seats in the 2019 Kia Soul, and four adults can fit comfortably inside the cabin. The interior may feel a little snug with five people, however. Cloth upholstery and manually adjustable front seats are standard. Leather-trimmed seats, full leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats are available.

Two sets of LATCH car-seat connectors are on the rear outboard seats. An upper middle tether is also present. The connectors are relatively easy to use, but the lower anchors are buried too deep in the outer seats.

  • "The cabin is handsome at the base level and improves measurably as the trim levels advance. Climb into the top Exclaim trim and you’ll find cloth and leather seats with contrasting orange stitching, a flat-bottom leather-wrapped steering wheel and available heated front and rear seats." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Hop into the driver's seat and you're immediately struck by the copious supply of high-quality surfaces, stylish design themes and an impressive equipment roster. The 2019 Soul is still a head-turner, to be sure, but it also cultivates a premium vibe for those inside, and that's sure to broaden its appeal." -- Autotrader
  • "The interior is better than most. Despite the abundance of black plastic inside, the panels are nicely grained and feel substantial. Any spots that you regularly touch or rest your elbows on are padded." -- Edmunds

Interior Features

For 2019, the Soul adds a standard 5-inch touch-screen infotainment system. Other standard features include a rearview camera, voice recognition, a six-speaker audio system, satellite radio, Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth, and a USB port. Available features include a 7- or 8-inch touch-screen UVO infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, push-button start, a panoramic sunroof, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

The Soul's audio and climate controls are fairly easy to use. Reviewers also find the available UVO infotainment system intuitive and user-friendly.

  • "Kia exceeds expectations when it comes to technology. A lot of features are built into the touchscreen (including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), which is easy to reach and operate. Response time is immediate, and the optional audio system delivers a solid punch." -- Edmunds
  • "Conventionally laid out within an expressively rendered interior, the Soul’s controls are easy to find and use." -- New York Daily News (2018)
  • "… the Soul is teeming with high-tech features, including an optional 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and even LED interior lighting that can be made to pulse along with your tunes." -- Car and Driver (2018)

The 2019 Soul gives you 24.2 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 61.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. This is an above-average rating in the class. However, the rear seats don't fold flat.

  • "… cargo space is adequate with the rear seat up but plentiful when folded down." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "… space increases to 61 cubic feet with the seats folded (they don't fold flat). That's better than most hatchbacks and subcompact SUVs and even beats some compact SUVs." -- Edmunds
  • "Although suited up with fancy features, the Soul remains highly utilitarian. With the rear seats up, the cargo volume is a very useable 24.2 cubic feet. When folded down, the Soul can swallow up to 61.3 cubic feet of stuff. However, I don't understand why the rear seats are merely foldable rather than fold-flat. Shouldn't flat be the standard these days?" -- New York Daily News (2017)
