2012 Kia Sorento Review
The 2012 Kia Sorento gets good fuel economy with its base engine, but reviewers said its available third row is very cramped and that ride quality isn't especially good over rough roads.
The Kia Sorento has a standard four-cylinder engine that reviewers said makes sufficient power, but most preferred the more powerful direct-injected four-cylinder engine or the available V6, which they agreed give the Sorento stronger acceleration. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, and all-wheel drive was optional when the Sorento was new. Fuel economy is up to an EPA-estimated 21/30 mpg city/highway, which is good for the class. Reviewers wrote that the Sorento has controlled handling, responsive steering and strong brakes. They said that the Sorento rides firmly, and while some reported that it is still comfortable, others wrote that the Sorento rides harshly over rough roads.
Auto journalists noted that the 2012 Kia Sorento's cabin is built with a mix of padded surfaces and nicely textured plastics, though some complained about wind and road noise in the cabin. They said there is enough legroom in the front seats, but noted headroom is a bit sparse for taller drivers in models with the available panoramic sunroof. The second row has sufficient space, though critics noted that the absence of a sliding seat reduces the flexibility of the Sorento's cabin. Most agreed that the available third row is laughably small and only fit for kids in a pinch. Bluetooth, satellite radio and a USB port are standard in the 2012 Sorento. Available features include a 10-speaker Infinity stereo system, a rearview camera and dual-zone automatic climate control. The Sorento has up to 72.5 cubic feet of cargo space, which is good for a two-row SUV, but less space that most three-row SUVs offer.
Other SUVs to Consider
With its standard four-cylinder engine, the 2012 Toyota Highlander gets good fuel economy for the class, and it comes standard with three rows of seats. Additionally, reviewers said the Highlander has a very comfortable ride and a well-built cabin.
Reviewers said that nimble handling makes the 2012 Nissan Murano one of the more entertaining midsize SUVs to drive. The Murano also earned praise for its quick acceleration and its luxurious cabin.
