2019 Kia Optima Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.1

The 2019 Kia Optima features one of the nicest cabins in the midsize car class. The interior looks great, uses plenty of soft-touch materials, and provides a lot of space for passengers in both rows of seats. Trunk space is above average, and the user-friendly UVO infotainment system headlines the tech offerings.

  • "Our Georgia test drive also provided a chance to soak up the 2019 Kia Optima SX 2.0T's interior. It's a handsome and quiet place, for sure, with high-quality soft-touch materials, a huge glovebox, easy-to-read gauges and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system that fills the cabin with glorious sounds." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There is plenty of plastic used inside the Optima, but it's sturdy and attractively grained. Creaks and squeaks are nonexistent, and the car feels as solid as any other sedan in the class." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • Kia went to great lengths to include honest-to-goodness double stitching on the Optima's dashboard, but that detail is largely lost in an expansive sea of black plastic. Materials are at least soft touch throughout the Optima's cabin." -- Left Lane News (2016)

Seating

The Optima seats five on stain-resistant cloth upholstery. Leatherette and leather upholstery, front sport seats, heated and ventilated front seats, power-adjustable front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The Optima's front seats provide lots of space and plenty of adjustability, making it easy to get comfortable. The SX trim's sport seats are well-bolstered, keeping you snugly in place around turns. The rear seats have ample head- and legroom as well, and even tall adults can ride in the back with little difficulty.

The back seat has two sets of lower anchors and three tether anchors for attaching child safety seats. The lower anchors are a bit hidden in the seat cushions, but otherwise, all LATCH hardware is clearly marked and user-friendly.

  • "The front seats -- Euro-styled buckets with large side bolsters -- are unique to the SX 2.0T. Trimmed in black leather with perforated seating surfaces done in red leather, these heated and cooled power seats offer great support in corners, but proved to be quite comfortable over the long haul. Headroom front and back, even with the giant panoramic moonroof, is excellent, and there's enough legroom for the Optima to accommodate four six-footers comfortably." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The front seats have plenty of space for larger passengers, and the range of adjustments will cover short and tall occupants. The rear seats benefit from an abundance of legroom, but headroom is merely adequate for the average adult." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Inside the Optima, the small exterior tweaks increased the available space for passengers. … The feeling of space is enhanced by the available panoramic sunroof (optional on EX and SX; standard on SXL). Front legroom for both the driver and passenger is exceptional, and a reasonable compromise can be made between front and rear occupants to allow for comfortable seating for five adults." -- Autotrader (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Optima include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, a USB port, a six-speaker audio system, and the UVO infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen. Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, rear parking sensors, forward collision avoidance assist, lane departure warning, lane change assist, lane keep assist, and driver drowsiness monitoring.

Available features include dual-zone automatic climate control, navigation, a panoramic sunroof, push-button start, a proximity key, three additional USB ports, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Available active safety features include forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and a surround-view camera.

The 2019 Optima comes standard with more driver assistance features than the outgoing model. The intuitive UVO infotainment system makes it easy to control the Optima's tech functions thanks to the logically arranged and clearly labeled physical controls. The touch screen responds quickly to inputs and features sharps graphics.

  • "The new navigation system is easy to use, with quick inputs, crisp graphics and clear directions. It's easy to enter a destination via the Optima's voice-recognition tech as well -- it has no trouble understanding complex street names." -- CNET
  • "The Uvo system is a cinch to use, with a logical menu structure and physical volume and tuning knobs. The standard six-speaker audio system won't win any awards, and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon system is a worthwhile addition on upper trims." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Above all, the refreshingly simple array of buttons and knobs is logical to use and requires no learning curve to operate. Kia's Uvo touchscreen interface, which includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capabilities, is similarly intuitive, though the screen itself is a bit of a reach from the driver's seat." -- Automobile Magazine (2016)

Cargo

The Optima has a 15.9-cubic-foot trunk and lots of storage space within the cabin. That's an above-average amount of space for a midsize car, though it's not class-leading. You can get extra room for large items by utilizing the rear-seat pass-through or folding down the rear seats entirely. A nifty available feature is the hands-free trunk lid, which opens automatically when you are standing behind the sedan for a few seconds with the available proximity key in your pocket.

  • … though trunk space is generous at 15.9 cubic feet, a Honda Accord or Hyundai Sonata will carry more junk in its trunk." -- CNET
  • "After our test drive, four of us shared a 2019 Kia Optima for the trip to the Atlanta airport. With any number of other midsize sedans, there would have been wrangling for one of the front seats, and a legitimate concern that all our luggage might not fit. But that didn't happen with the 2019 Kia Optima. Rather, the airport run underscored just how capable it is as a sedan. The four of us fit well inside, the roomy trunk swallowed our baggage with ease." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Optima's carrying capacity is about as good as it gets in this class. The trunk is expansive, with a low load height, tall roof and wide opening. It also opens automatically after a few seconds if you have the key in your pocket. There's ample interior storage as well." -- Edmunds (2018)
