2020 Kia Optima Hybrid Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.9

The 2020 Kia Optima Hybrid has a quality interior with soft-touch plastics and top-notch fit and finish. It’s well-insulated to keep out harsh road and wind noise too. The only demerit for the cabin is that the design is not all that exciting. There are lots of easy-to-use tech features, but rear-seat headroom and cargo space are lacking.

  • "In both the Optima Hybrid and the Optima Plug-In Hybrid, fit and finish appears to be excellent, while wind noise is also hushed, and the operation of the hybrid powertrain never intrudes on your driving experience." -- Autotrader
  • "There isn't a lot of visual excitement inside the Optima, but it is smartly designed for function. The quality of materials and available features make you feel as if you're getting just a bit more for your money." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are standard, and options such as a panoramic sunroof, heated leather seats, and a Harman/Kardon audio system create a premium vibe." -- Car and Driver (2017)

Seating

This vehicle seats five people in two rows. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat come standard. A 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and a 10-way power-adjustable front passenger seat are available. Upgrades include ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

While there’s plenty of legroom in both rows, headroom in the back is restricted by the sloping roof.

For securing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the Optima Hybrid’s rear outboard seats, as well as an upper tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The lower anchors are set deep in the seats but are otherwise easy to use.

  • "The front seats have plenty of space for larger passengers, and the range of adjustments will cover short and tall occupants. The rear outboard seats benefit from an abundance of legroom, but headroom is only adequate for adults of average height." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "As it is in the standard Optima, the hybrid's passenger compartment is a satisfying place to spend time. It boasts great fit and finish, an easy-to-use control layout, and comfortable seats front and back." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "The Optima is already quite spacious inside with ample leg room even in the back seat, but this big sunroof on the Hybrid EX trim makes it feel wide open." -- Jalopnik (2017)

Interior Features

The entry-level Optima Hybrid features Kia's UVO infotainment system, an 8-inch touch screen, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless device charging, satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, a USB port, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Also included is the Kia Drive Wise suite of safety features, which has forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, lane change assist, adaptive cruise control, and a driver attention monitor. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors come standard too.

Available features include voice navigation, a premium 10-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, HD Radio, and a panoramic sunroof.

The UVO infotainment system is easy to use, thanks to numerous physical controls, an intuitive menu layout, and crisp graphics on the touch screen.

  • "Kudos to Kia for an easy-to-use infotainment system with high-quality graphics and plenty of redundant physical buttons so you don't get lost in menus. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are appreciated." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "With Android Auto and Apple CarPlay standard across the board on a 7-inch touch screen, the 2018 Optima feels that much more modern. And what's not to like: Both systems offer up the same interface you've grown to love on your phone, and with similar functionality, too." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "The Optima Hybrid EX nailed one important detail: its controls were relatively easy to figure out, with many of its most important infotainment features supplemented by a series of physical controls, both on the center console as well as on the steering wheel. You don't need to physically look away to the 8-inch infotainment unit's screen to adjust many of the car's most vital functions." -- Jalopnik (2017)

Cargo

The Optima Hybrid has a 13.4-cubic-foot trunk. That’s less space than the nonhybrid Kia Optima’s 15.9 cubic feet but more space than the 9.9 cubic feet found in plug-in-hybrid models. It’s also a bit small for a midsize hybrid.

  • "With 13.4 cubic feet of storage, trunk space is slightly less than the class average for a midsize hybrid sedan. It gains extra points for 60/40-split rear seats, though the opening is on the small side." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "Another impressive element of Kia's hybrid system is the way the battery pack fits neatly under the rear seat. With this placement, the Optima's trunk measures 13 cubic feet, larger than the 12 cubic feet found in the Fusion hybrid or the Malibu hybrid (but 2.5 cubes less than the gasoline-only Optima). The Optima hybrid also maintains the 60/40 split-folding rear seat, which provides a wide pass-through for larger items." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "Just enough space for my two huge bags, a small laptop bag and room for another overpacked person's crap (or two or three) on top of that." -- Jalopnik (2017)
