2019 Kia Optima Hybrid Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.8

The 2019 Kia Optima Hybrid's interior isn't extravagant, but it features quality materials like standard leather-trimmed seats. Though you'll find plastic surfaces inside this Kia, they are well-made. The Optima Hybrid’s standard and available tech features are easy to use, but this midsize hybrid could benefit from extra rear-seat headroom and cargo space.

  • "There isn't a lot of visual excitement inside the Optima, but it is smartly designed for function. The quality of materials and available features make you feel as if you're getting just a bit more for your money." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "In both the Optima Hybrid and the Optima Plug-In Hybrid, fit and finish appears to be excellent, while wind noise is also hushed, and the operation of the hybrid powertrain never intrudes on your driving experience." -- Autotrader (2018)
  • "Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are standard, and options such as a panoramic sunroof, heated leather seats, and a Harman/Kardon audio system create a premium vibe." -- Car and Driver (2017)

Seating

There's seating for up to five people in the Optima Hybrid. Leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support, a rear air-conditioning vent, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are standard. Available features include a power-adjustable passenger seat with lumbar support, updated leather-trimmed seats, ventilated seats, and a heated steering wheel. There's plenty of space up front, and the seats are comfortable. The back row has a good amount of passenger space overall, especially legroom. However, a sloped roofline hinders rear-seat headroom for taller passengers, and the back-row cushions could use more support.

There are two sets of LATCH car-seat connectors on the rear-outboard seats, as well as an upper tether on the middle seat.

  • The front seats have plenty of space for larger passengers, and the range of adjustments will cover short and tall occupants. The rear outboard seats benefit from an abundance of legroom, but headroom is only adequate for adults of average height." -- Edmunds
  • "As it is in the standard Optima, the hybrid's passenger compartment is a satisfying place to spend time. It boasts great fit and finish, an easy-to-use control layout, and comfortable seats front and back." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "The Optima is already quite spacious inside with ample leg room even in the back seat, but this big sunroof on the Hybrid EX trim makes it feel wide open." -- Jalopnik (2017)

Interior Features

The Optima Hybrid comes standard with a good number of features, including advanced safety equipment such as a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and lane change assist. Other standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control and Kia's UVO infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, three USB ports, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and six speakers. The standard infotainment system is user-friendly and intuitive. The touch screen features sharp graphics and menus that are easy to navigate, with physical controls at the bottom of the control panel.

Available safety features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic braking, lane departure warning, and high-beam assist. Other optional features include an 8-inch touch screen, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, navigation, and HD Radio.

  • "Kudos to Kia for an easy-to-use infotainment system with high-quality graphics and plenty of redundant physical buttons so you don't get lost in menus. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are appreciated." -- Edmunds
  • "With Android Auto and Apple CarPlay standard across the board on a 7-inch touch screen, the 2018 Optima feels that much more modern. And what's not to like: Both systems offer up the same interface you've grown to love on your phone, and with similar functionality, too." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "The Optima Hybrid EX nailed one important detail: its controls were relatively easy to figure out, with many of its most important infotainment features supplemented by a series of physical controls, both on the center console as well as on the steering wheel. You don't need to physically look away to the 8-inch infotainment unit's screen to adjust many of the car's most vital functions." -- Jalopnik (2017)

Cargo

You'll find 13.4 cubic feet of trunk space in the Optima Hybrid. That's about average for a midsize hybrid. The Optima Hybrid comes standard with 60/40 split-folding rear seats that make the cargo area more versatile. This is a nice benefit to have when lugging large cargo around. The larger battery pack in the Optima Plug-In Hybrid shrinks trunk space to 9.9 cubic feet, which is also below average.

  • With 13.4 cubic feet of storage, trunk space is slightly less than the class average for a midsize hybrid sedan. It gains extra points for 60/40-split rear seats, though the opening is on the small side." -- Edmunds
  • "Another impressive element of Kia's hybrid system is the way the battery pack fits neatly under the rear seat. With this placement, the Optima's trunk measures 13 cubic feet, larger than the 12 cubic feet found in the Fusion hybrid or the Malibu hybrid (but 2.5 cubes less than the gasoline-only Optima). The Optima hybrid also maintains the 60/40 split-folding rear seat, which provides a wide pass-through for larger items." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "Just enough space for my two huge bags, a small laptop bag and room for another overpacked person's crap (or two or three) on top of that." -- Jalopnik (2017)
