2017 Kia Optima Hybrid Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.7

There’s a clean look to the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid’s interior. The controls are laid out in an intuitive manner, and the seats are comfortable. Its 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system also includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two features no smartphone owner wants to be without. Cargo space is typical for a midsize hybrid, but less than average for the midsize class as a whole.

  • "As it is in the standard Optima, the hybrid's passenger compartment is a satisfying place to spend time. It boasts great fit and finish, an easy-to-use control layout, and comfortable seats front and back. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are standard, and options such as a panoramic sunroof, heated leather seats, and a Harman/Kardon audio system create a premium vibe." -- Car and Driver
  • "It's a clean design, and one that maintains the driver-oriented tilt of the previous car. All of the interior materials felt very high quality, with soft-touch surfaces on the door tops, dash and pretty much everywhere else you'd want them." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • Kia optimized the exterior for aerodynamics, but the Optima Hybrid's cabin is largely unchanged – same clean but conservative dash, adequate material quality, and comfortable seats. The main thing you're losing out on with the Hybrid, at least in the cabin, is the gas-powered SX Limited's upgraded interior trim, like the lovely quilted leather seats. Keep that in mind if you're an upholstery snob." -- Autoblog

Seating

Cloth upholstery and a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar control come standard in the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid. You’ll get leather upholstery and a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar and memory in higher trim levels. Heated front seats are also standard above the base trim. Cooled seats are optional.

There’s plenty of room for five people in the Optima Hybrid, and tall passengers will find the rear seat comfortable. However, the Camry Hybrid and Fusion Hybrid offer even more legroom.

There are two full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors in the rear outboard seats and an additional upper tether in the middle seat. The lower anchors can be hard to reach because they're tucked deep inside the bottom cushion.

  • "The seats were plenty comfortable, and the back seat is downright huge, offering ample legroom even for tall passengers." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The cabin is roomy with clean lines." -- New York Daily News

  • "Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are standard, and options such as a panoramic sunroof, heated leather seats, and a Harman/Kardon audio system create a premium vibe." -- Car and Driver
  • "Although you can find harman/kardon systems in other cars, the QuantumLogic7 surround audio system in the 2017 Kia Optima goes one step beyond. The sound is amazing and even old MP3 files find new life thanks to the Clari-Fi feature that helps restore digitally compressed files." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The black leather interior was tastefully accented with metallic finishes. And the control knobs and buttons were not only intuitive in placement also operation. Available in two trim levels, the Hybrid Premium is equipped with a 7-inch color touchscreen, rear camera and UVO3 infotainment system, which includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration." -- New York Daily News

Cargo

Kia places a high-density lithium-polymer battery pack under the trunk floor to keep the Optima Hybrid’s cargo space competitive. That design also allows Kia to include a 60/40 split folding rear seat, an uncommon feature in most hybrids.

  • "Another impressive element of Kia's hybrid system is the way the battery pack fits neatly under the rear seat. With this placement, the Optima's trunk measures 13 cubic feet, larger than the 12 cubic feet found in the Fusion hybrid or the Malibu hybrid (but 2.5 cubes less than the gasoline-only Optima). The Optima hybrid also maintains the 60/40 split-folding rear seat, which provides a wide pass-through for larger items." -- Car and Driver
