2019 Kia Niro Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 6.2

The 2019 Kia Niro offers comfortable seating, mostly high-quality interior materials, and good outward visibility for the driver. There's plenty of passenger and cargo room in the Niro, and it comes standard with lots of technology features, including smartphone integration. That said, some reviewers note the use of some low-grade materials, and a fair amount of road noise makes its way into the cabin.

  • "A number of years ago, Kia’s interior design went from frumpy to fantastic, and the cabin of the 2019 Kia Niro is one of the finest in its class. The design is clean and simple with an upscale feel and high-quality materials. The layout is intuitive, and all of the controls work with precision." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "A lot of hard plastic covers the lower half of the doors, dash and center console. The interior looks cheap in the light gray color scheme. Even the soft-touch surfaces on the upper parts of the dash lack a quality feel. The armrest padding isn't bad but could be better on the doors." -- Edmunds
  • "The cloth and leather seat material looks and feels sturdy, with contrasting stitching adding flair." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Seating

The Niro has seating for five people, and adults should be content sitting in both the front and rear seats. The Niro has well-padded seats, making it comfortable to sit in this Kia even on extended trips. Cloth upholstery and four-way manually adjustable front seats are standard. Available features include a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, ventilated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

For installing child safety seats, there are two sets of LATCH car-seat connectors on the rear outboard seats and an upper tether on the rear middle seat.

  • "The seats aren't anything fancy but have good padding and decent lateral and lumbar support." -- Edmunds
  • "There’s plenty of rear-seat headroom and legroom for 6-footers." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The elevated, upright seating position lends the Niro more of an SUV feel than that of a typical car. Headroom is generous, and the steering wheel has plenty of tilt/telescope adjustment." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in all models include dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, and an infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, six speakers, Bluetooth, voice recognition, and a USB port. The standard UVO infotainment system features easy-to-use controls. You can also use physical buttons on the center of the control panel to control audio and climate functions.

Available features include push-button start, an 8-inch touch screen, navigation, an eight-speaker premium audio system, a wireless phone charger, HD Radio, and an additional USB port. Optional safety features include front and rear parking sensors, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

  • "The layout is intuitive, and all of the controls work with precision." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Niro is strong on the technology front, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included as standard equipment and a host of available advanced safety systems that aren't even offered on some cars above its class." -- Edmunds
  • "To the Niro's credit, its controls are intuitive and free of any confusing features. The gear selector operates in a traditional fashion, and the 7-inch infotainment system is a piece-of-cake to use. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility is standard." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Cargo

You'll find 19.4 cubic feet of cargo space in the Niro when the second-row seats are up and 54.5 cubic feet when the second row is folded down. These are great numbers for the class. Unlike most hybrid vehicles that carry their battery packs in their trunks, the Niro's battery pack is stored under the rear seat, creating a more expansive cargo area. Standard 60/40 split-folding seats make it easy to haul additional items while also carrying one or two people in the back row.

  • "… the 60/40-split-folding seatback adds valuable cargo/passenger flexibility." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Unlike other hybrids with whose utility is compromised by how and where the battery is stored, the Niro's lithium-ion battery is located under the rear seat, which allows for a flat, uninterrupted cargo floor when the rear seats are folded." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • When I opened the rear liftgate, I was not blown away by … the trunk space but, then again, I can't say that many subcompact SUVs impressed me in that category. Measuring 19.4 cubic feet behind the second row and 54.4 cubic feet with the seats folded, the Niro actually measures up favorably to class leaders such as the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3 and even the highly capable Jeep Renegade." -- New York Daily News (2018)
