2015 Kia K900 Review

The Kia K900 impresses with its hushed and roomy interior, supple ride, potent V8 engine, and many standard features. But in a sea of compelling alternatives, the K900 just feels average.

Pros & Cons

  • Smooth ride
  • Potent V8 engine
  • Quiet, upscale cabin
  • Low fuel economy
  • Cumbersome handling

2015 Kia K900 Overview

Is the 2015 Kia K900 a Good Used Car?

The Kia K900 is a fine option if you’re shopping for a used luxury car but don’t want to spend a lot. The K900 boasts a refined powertrain, a buttery ride, an elegant cabin, and many high-tech convenience features. Additionally, used K900 models are often available for thousands less than class competitors. That said, class leaders, which include the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS, offer sportier handling and the cachet of a luxury brand name. If that’s important to you, you’ll want to give this plush Kia a pass.

Used 2015 Kia K900 Performance and Interior

The Kia K900 has a 420-horsepower V8 engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard. The potent V8 has more than enough muscle to easily rocket this luxury car up to speed, and the refined transmission delivers quick, seamless gear changes. The K900 feels solid and secure at highway speeds. Its brakes provide confident stopping power, and its suspension sops up most bumps in the road, providing the Kia with a silky-smooth ride quality.

The K900's performance is far from perfect, however. The V8 offers meager fuel economy of just 15 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The soft suspension also gives the K900 a lumbering and somewhat clumsy feel when rounding tight corners. Dull and overly light power steering doesn’t help either.

The Kia K900 seats five and impresses with its upscale and library-quiet cabin. There’s very little wind or road noise, even when cruising on the highway. The K900’s front seats are soft, nicely contoured, and highly adjustable. Even tall drivers and passengers can find a comfortable seating position. The spacious rear seats are even more inviting, especially when equipped with Kia’s available VIP package, which adds power-reclining functions and a center armrest with individual seat and climate controls. All models feature leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and rear sunshades as standard. Soft-closing doors and ventilated rear seats are available. There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for securing child car seats. The K900’s trunk has a roomy 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space.

Kia equips all K900 sedans with a 9.2-inch infotainment screen, a navigation system, Bluetooth, a USB port, satellite radio, tri-zone climate control, and proximity keyless entry. Available features include a head-up display that projects driving information onto the windshield. The dashboard is elegantly styled, uncluttered, and features a mix of rich wood and aluminum accents. Material quality feels top-notch. The large infotainment screen has crisp graphics and quick response times, but unlike other Kia infotainment systems, it’s not a touch screen. Instead, drivers use a dial on the center console to control the screen’s functions. The system works fairly well but feels more complex than the similar BMW iDrive and Audi MMI setups.

How Safe Is the K900?

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has published full crash test results for the 2015 model year. Because of the associated costs, many luxury cars undergo few if any crash tests.

The K900 has many advanced safety features. All models come with front and rearview cameras, front and rear parking sensors, and adaptive headlights that pivot when turning. Available features include forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view monitor (aka a 360-degree camera). Blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and lane departure warning are found only in K900 Luxury models.

Should I Consider Another Used K900?

Kia launched the K900 luxury sedan as an all-new model for 2015. You may want to consider the newer 2016 and 2017 K900 because they offer a more efficient V6 engine and an automatic emergency braking system. Otherwise, there are few differences between these model years, and you'll likely find used 2015 models at lower prices.

Which Used Kia K900 Is Right for Me?

The 2015 K900 is available in two trim levels: Premium and Luxury. The base model K900 Premium is well-equipped with an infotainment system, tri-zone climate control, keyless entry, rear sunshades, heated and ventilated front leather seats, heated rear seats, adaptive headlights, front and rearview cameras, and parking sensors. The K900 Luxury trim adds blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and a sunroof.

You may want to shop for a certified pre-owned K900. Kia’s certified pre-owned vehicles receive the balance of the original 10-year/100,000-mile new-car powertrain warranty, plus a one-year/12,000-mile Platinum warranty for non-powertrain parts. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Kia warranty page carefully.

2015 Kia K900 and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2015 Kia K900 or 2015 Hyundai Equus?

The Hyundai Equus and Kia K900 are mechanically related. Each offers the same powerful but thirsty V8 engine, roomy seating space, and a plush ride. Both also share many of the same convenience and safety features, though the Hyundai adds a few extra luxuries like a rear-seat entertainment system. The major differences come down to styling and price. The K900 has cleaner lines inside and out, and a used K900 is often less expensive than a used Equus. However, neither are top picks in this competitive class.

Which Is Better: 2015 Kia K900 or 2015 Hyundai Genesis?

The Hyundai Genesis received a major overhaul for 2015, which catapulted this luxury midsize car toward the top of its class. The Genesis sedan matches nearly all of the K900’s convenience and safety features, offers all-wheel drive and a more efficient V6 engine, and impresses with its luxe cabin and comfy ride. Used Genesis models are typically more affordable as well. The K900 stands out for its available reclining rear seats that provide more legroom, but the Genesis is the better buy.

Which Is Better: 2015 Kia K900 or 2015 Kia Cadenza?

The 2015 Kia Cadenza offers the interior refinement, smooth ride, and many of the same features as the larger K900 but at an even lower price. The Cadenza also has a higher predicted reliability rating and a V6 engine with better fuel economy. It’s a great value.
