Scorecard

Interior: 8.5

The cabin in the 2017 Kia Forte offers attractive styling and high-quality materials, including soft-touch surfaces that you rarely find in compact cars. Of course, it isn't a luxury vehicle, but for what it is, the Forte's interior looks and feels good. The 2017 Kia Forte has an extensive list of standard and optional safety and entertainment features. The Forte is comfortable and spacious in both the front and rear seats. Still, back-seat headroom is a bit cramped for taller riders. Among compact cars of the same body style, the Forte sedan has one of the largest trunks in the class.

  • The Forte's cabin certainly isn't opulent, but it seems sturdy and well-assembled." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The 2017 Kia Forte is much more than just an economy car stuffed with gadgets. Boasting a handsome cabin furnished with quality materials, especially in the higher trim levels, the Forte gives other top compacts a run for their money." -- Edmunds
  • "The interior doesn't look much different this year, retaining the logical controls and comfort, plus the whimsy of the passenger-side dash ripples. The soft-touch dash is exemplary of the overall quality of materials inside." -- Kelley Blue Book

Seating

The front seats are comfortable, and there's good legroom for 6-foot-tall adults in both rows. Though the rear middle seat is generally the least desired spot in a car, the Forte's is comfortable enough for short drives, according to some reviewers. Some taller adults will find headroom to be poor in the back seats because of the car's sloped roofline. Forward visibility is good but less so out the back.

The 2017 Forte is available in sedan and hatchback body styles, and a coupe version will be available later in 2017. All models come standard with cloth upholstery and a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat. Available features include leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a ventilated driver’s seat.

The Kia Forte's LATCH car-seat system includes a complete set of upper tethers and lower anchors in the rear outboard seats and an upper tether in the middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has yet to rate the Forte's LATCH system.

  • "Seat comfort front and rear in the sedan and Forte5 is very good, and even 6-foot adults should be comfortable sitting in back." -- Edmunds
  • Passengers will find good leg- and headroom-indeed, the leg space for rear-seat passengers is a nice surprise. A minor floor hump makes it possible for a third adult to occupy the middle of the back seat, at least for a little while. Driver vision to the front and sides is pretty good but suffers some at the rear corners." -- Consumer Guide
  • The 2017 Kia Forte offers decent room for four adults front and rear, though headroom in the rear will be tight for taller adults—a result of the rakish roofline that reduces aerodynamic drag." -- The Car Connection

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2017 Kia Forte include Bluetooth, a four-speaker stereo, satellite radio, and a USB port. Available features include a six-speaker stereo, push-button start, cruise control, a rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, HD Radio, a sunroof, automatic emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot detection, and forward collision alert. New for 2017, the Forte's available 7-inch UVO infotainment system comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The UVO infotainment system earns praise for being one of the most easy to use on the market. The touch screen's buttons are big, straightforward, and well-arranged. With available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, staying connected to your smartphone only takes a couple of steps. Climate controls are also simple to operate.

  • "And we continue to view Kia's infotainment system as among the best and most intuitive in the business." -- The Car Connection
  • "The audio system-now with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility—is easy to set and use (station tuning is via an external knob), and other screen-based functions show up well for quick access. The three climate-control dials are simplicity itself." -- Consumer Guide
  • "In addition, the Forte's high-tech features are well-designed and easy to use. The 7-inch touchscreen interface, with large, logically positioned virtual buttons, is one of the better examples of this technology." -- Edmunds

Cargo

The 2017 Kia Forte sedan has 14.9 cubic feet of trunk space, which is above average for a compact car and plenty of room for a few suitcases. The hatchback model has 23.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind its back seats, which is more than what some compact cars offer. The Forte has standard 60/40 split-folding back seats, and the seats fold nearly flat for maximum storage space. The wide trunk opening also makes it simple to load cargo.

  • "The Forte sedan offers very generous cargo capacity, with a trunk capacity of 14.9 cubic feet." -- Edmunds
  • "As for trunk space, the Forte's 14.9 cubic feet beats almost all competitors. The trunk lid's cut wide, for easy loading, and the rear seats fold down, almost flat, when needed." -- The Car Connection
  • The trunk floor is flat but not overwhelmingly large, and it narrows somewhat between the wheelhouses, but there's still room for several pieces of luggage or plenty of groceries." -- Consumer Guide
