Which Midsize SUV Is Right for You?

SUVs, especially car-based crossovers, have virtually displaced sedans as the rides of choice among American families, singles, and empty nesters alike. They’re roomier and afford added cargo space than same-size cars, and their higher ground clearance affords a more commanding view of the road ahead.

Two popular – and popularly priced – examples among midsize models are the Kia Sorento and the Hyundai Santa Fe. Both are similar in size and offer a choice of front- or all-wheel drive, but many key differences stand out between them.

The Hyundai Santa Fe, which before its 2019 redesign was named the Santa Fe Sport, comes with two rows of seats and holds five passengers. Its three-row version has since been discontinued and replaced by the Hyundai Palisade. It most directly competes against other two-row midsize models like the Ford Edge, Honda Passport, and Nissan Murano.

The Sorento, on the other hand, features three rows and can hold seven. It goes up against models like the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, and Kia’s own recently added Telluride.

We’ll look at each model on a point-by-point basis in this slideshow to determine which is best.
